To quantify: air conducts electricity (draws a spark) when the electric field is stronger than 3x10^6 volts/meter. If a spark jumps one millimeter from your finger to something else, it crossed a potential difference of 3x10^6 V/m * 10^-3 m = 3,000 Volts. (There's not much current involved, though, which is why it doesn't hurt.) This large potential, however, is due to a relatively small amount of charge and the fact that your fingertip is sharply curved (ever notice how the palm of your hand never draws a spark, only the fingertip?). This charge can be harmlessly dissapated, as noted, by touching the metal part of your box's case. Rob -- The young lady had an unusual list, Linked in part to a structural weakness. Have you enabled Scsi Generic support in your kernel config. It should give you a module called (IIRC) sg.o which is used to send specific scsi commands for cd writting. Network Problems on Debian 2.2 box
Hi, Ok, the problem: I telnet, vnc, etc. (basically connect to the box with some sort of interactive client) and after about 5 mins (not sure couldn't quite time it) the client gets kicked of (Putty 0.51 reports Network error: Software caused connection abort). Now the machine refuses any network connections to for about 15-60 secs and sometimes during this period a subsequent portscan shows up ports that's definitly not on this machine (from which/what machine I don't know as a traceroute shows one hop which is correct and ngrep doesn't show anything usefull - not that I really know what to look for though). After this short period though I can reconnect only to be bumped of later again! The connection abort doesn't kill the telnet/bash session though and when I telnet in again the processes of the apps I was working on is still sitting there. A who shows me still connected (with the current session plus the previous ones shown) and killing the telnet process doesn't seem to refresh who's output. I'm running a 15 second delayed ping to an internet host in a screen session to try and see if the box looses connectivity but it seems fine, the only thing I can see is that it seems to pick up some network lag at intervals; the worst of which seem to conincide with being kicked, but not always! Where do I look to see what settings might control this type of behaviour, is there an app that does this? I've checked cron as well as at and the only jobs scheduled is mrtg and exim each every 30mins. I've attached the package list, process tree and extra info like the modules loaded. Please let me know what other info is required to make the picture clearer. The box has two 3com 905B NIC's sharing IRQ 10, with only one currently up. I want to set the box up as a Firewall/Proxy with a smtp gateway, and this behaviour will make internet access through it almost impossible! If it was just the telnet sessions timimg out I wouldn't have worried as much and accepted is as more of a security 'feature' but VNC sessions get booted as well, and I haven't set any timeouts! I'm pulling my hair out here, I've reinstalled this box twice and have the latest stable packages from my nearest mirror (ftp://ftp.is.co.za/linux/distributions/debian/) and security.debian.org! Apologies, I didn't read through your post the first time through. If you are doing both the above an you still can't start any X applications, provide additional detail. Essentially, the following should work or provide more information. - Start in an existing X session as a user capable of displaying clients on the active display. - Connect to the remote host. For debugging purposes, use the verbose option: $ ssh -X -v [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2>&1 | tee ssh.log - Launch an X client from the remote client. Sound advice. The problem with the water-pipe ground is that your pipes may not actually be grounded. Many of the more modern systems have a nonconducting union near the supply connection, specifically inserted to break the circuit to ground. (This is to prevent electrolytic corrosion of water meters, pumps, and the like.) Even if your water system doesn't have one, it may not be well earthed, which could allow dangerous voltages to be present at the taps. Your supply connection, for example, may be entirely plastic, even if you have copper or steel pipe in the house. Or the soil may be too dry for proper conduction. A tested, dedicated electrical ground is the only way to be sure. -- Mark H. Wood, Lead System Programmer [EMAIL PROTECTED] Make a good day.

Anyway, w.r.t. static, the important thing is not being at ground potential (whatever that means) but having all parts at the *same* potential. Touching bare metal in the case or chassis (the power supply is a good choice) will bring your body to the same potential as that of the parts in the computer. Laying sensitive parts in a similar position, while still in the antistatic packaging, should do the same for them. I've heard advice that you should do this with the mains power *dis*connected, and on reflection that's excellent advice. That way you take care of high-voltage low-current static charges, and avoid the lower-voltage high-current mains that can kill you. Plus, you could pick up an inexpensive antistatic wrist strap for just a few dollars. If you do a lot of work inside computer cases, it's a worthwhile investment. Outfits like Jensen Tools have wrist straps, antistatic floor mats and benchtoppers, toe/heel straps, you name it. -- Mark H. Wood, Lead System Programmer [EMAIL PROTECTED] Make a good day.

Getting dselect to read .deb files without Packages,Release, etc files
Hi, How do I get dselect or another apt frontend tool read and use locally downloaded .deb files for which I'm unable (read apt-move, dpkg-scan-packages dosn't do it - I don't know how to get it to) to create the appropriate Packages & Release files and directory structure. apt-move doesn't like ftp.is.co.za 's dir structure and just generally seemed not to work. dpkg-scanpackages requires me to create a override file ... lots of manual work and faulty. Do I use some other tool ? and will it pick up and use the correct files for dependencies? TIA, Eugene van Zyl

I agree with the info below. May I pass on another hint I was given many years ago. Before you start work, spit on your hands and rub them together. RE: kernel question
This WON't be easy if you're systemdisk is really damaged. It's pretty hard to explain this in an email because of the variety of conditions, let us know if you're getting somewhere or feeling rather lost. Did you allready boot into single user mode and run efsck2 ? Maybe you're just experiencing some other problem than real-life disk damage. Your system had a powerfailure and your filetables are messed up ... It boot's ? Take a look at step one and two below. Start making backups NOW. then reinstall your system, it's likely that it suffered a lot of damage. Some scenario = first of all : GET yourself some bootdisk/cd wich can be used to mount the root filesystem if that succeeded look for /boot and copy these contents to somewhere safe (will restore other kernels also, might want to narrow down the selection a bit) if there IS no /boot t you'll probably have to mount it, make sure you know wich is wich and go for a backup all the same second : you could try to see if your /usr/src directory's are intact, if you were smart enough to save your kernelconfig into a config file back up this file and start to reinstall, this would be the most flexible way to go. Do you remember if you did and where you left the config file ? Doesn't boot ? : if your drive is really seriously damaged start reading up on configuring SMP kernels, you'll HAVE to do it again with another disk. Upgrade advantage in Debian vrs. RedHat
Can someone explain the advantage many see in Debian upgrades vrs. RedHat? To take a concrete example, lets say I planned to start upgrading my home throwaway box (where I put up slink a few years back). I have only installed so far using dpackage. If I do apt-gets for a whole set of packages, I will get my add-ons upgraded to the latest and greatest (if I understand this correctly). But I still will have to make a plan & upgrade the *system* software, right? I.e., *everything* isn't packaged. Am I missing something? While I can see that getting the add-on stuff uptodate is of great value, I would rather be able to install a set of packages (with fall-back capability) to do an upgrade. Am I missing something? I disagree with this, and I hear it a lot. I have a HP 932C and yep, the price per page is bad, especially with the photo-paper it needs to print decent photos, but then I find myself printing about 5 photo pages a month. Hardly worth the cost of a color laser-printer with equivalent quality. In fact, I've had my inkjet about a year now and have yet to replace an ink cartridge. I think inkjets fill a valuable niche in the market for a lot of us small, home-office folks who only need a printer occasionally, but want decent quality and speed when we do need a printout, and don't want to fork over a couple thousand $ for a decent color laser printer. That's my two cents worth, Gary

Kernel panic after upgrade to 2.4.2
Thanks in advance for your help. I decided to go to kernel 2.4.2 on my testing box. Did a apt-get install to get the source. Got my old config file from /boot and put it in the source and did a make oldconfig. I then did a make xconfig and made sure that I had ext2 support and elf and a.out all compiled in (along with the other options that I wanted) It compiled with no errors except it did complain about not being able to find /usr/src/modules but it went on from there (I assumed that was if I wanted a non standard module and ignored it) In any case I got my .deb (make-kpkg revision=custom.1.0 kernel_image was the command I used to make it) and did a dpkg -i it all ran well with no errors. I ran lilo a couple of times just to be sure. :) And did a reboot. And now I am getting a kernel panic saying can't mount the root device 030:030 and to add a correct root paramater. I have the right root paramater in lilo.conf (root=/dev/hda3) and also tried passing it this by hand at the lilo prompt Linux root=/dev/hda3. I'm still getting the same error message. My old kernel still boots fine. So any ideas on how I managed to break it? Once again thanks very much.

Pretty much everything is packaged; using 'apt-get dist-upgrade' should get you the most recent version of everything, except the kernel. What you're thinking of as the "system software" is probably the packages in the Debian "base" section; these get upgraded along with everything else. The one exception to this is the kernel; since it's reasonable to have multiple kernel versions installed, each is in its own package. You can manually install the most recent kernel package or not; things should still work fine. So: DR> Can someone explain the advantage many see in Debian upgrades DR> vrs. RedHat? To take a concrete example, lets say I planned to start DR> upgrading my home throwaway box (where I put up slink a few years DR> back). In a sense, Red Hat *only* contains the "system software", so there's no real way to upgrade everything (including "add-ons"). Just finding the right RPM for a particular package is a pain; if you go to e.g. rpmfind you get a big mass of packages, one of which might match your distribution's libraries and use a compatible version of RPM. And upgrading a Red Hat distribution, especially between major versions, is pretty much impossible; I've heard people have had very good results upgrading between versions of Debian. In short, to upgrade a Debian box between stable versions, you need to check that your /etc/apt/sources.list file is correct (contains an entry for "stable"), and run 'apt-get update' and 'apt-get dist-upgrade', answer some questions, and you're done. (Appropriate modifications of this using CDs are certainly possible.) With Red Hat, you pretty much need to completely reinstall. -- David Maze [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://people.debian.org/~dmaze/ "Theoretical politics is interesting. (You also get a much more recent version of openssh than you would on a potato system.) If you'd been trying this with a slink or hamm system, would apt-get have been able to do anything? In general, the advantages I see over redhat in terms of packaging are * Much more packaged, and all to the same standards * Much more likely then that anything you want will be packaged and upgradable automatically * Much easier to keep packages up-to-date, since you need to do it yourself with rpmfind or autorpm on RH, or pay to use up2date * Much easier to download new packages as you need them with apt-get. All told, that means one is more likely to keep a system updated and secure. But please don't try to demonstrate that RH is unusable simply because you don't know it as well as you use Debian... the reverse could just as easily be said. -- Alan Shutko <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> - In a variety of flavors! I've seen an ITP for InterBase (e.g. firebird.sourceforge.net), but no packages yet. As for MySQL v PostgreSQL, you may want to check out http://openacs.org/philosophy/why-not-mysql.html which lists a number of reasons why OpenACS (a RDBMS-heavy project) choose not to support MySQL. Some of those reasons may no longer apply (e.g. recent versions of MySQL support transactions), but much of it is still valid, in particular if you require features to be time-tested. Tim Perdue, "MySQL and PostgreSQL Compared", http://www.phpbuilder.com/columns/tim2705.php3 is also a very useful resource. In my experience, PostgreSQL is a reliable RDBMS that supports many features that make development of database-heavy applications easy, such as a large sub-set of SQL (including e.g. subselects and views), transactions, referential integrety (foreign keys), constraints, triggers (e.g. using the Pl/PgSQL extension language). The way I understand it, if it works under Linux, then it'll work under Win4Lin. Win4Lin uses the underlying systems (i.e., printing, networking, etc.) to accomplish it's tasks. I haven't really tested this fully, but I haven't found any device that works with Win4Lin but doesn't work under Linux. Just my .02. -- steve

I think that Debian people are just smarter at doing things the Debian way than RH users are at doing things the RH way. Upgrading a Redhat dist between major versions is quite doable. It's trival between minor versions. But this depends on the admin having done everything the RH way, so things can be upgraded easily. It's depressingly common for RH admins to start replacing things with tarballs here, rewrite init scripts to init your network instead of using the provided hooks, etc. This stuff breaks on upgrades. If you were to do the same stuff on Debian, it would probably break too. Having done the RHL4->5->6->6.9beta->7.0 upgrades, I'm comfortable in saying it can be done without much more pain than an rpm --rebuild on your home-built RPMs and a bit of attention in /etc to check what .rpm{save, new} popped up. (And a reboot, since you can't upgrade a live system between versions.) Again, it's probably the fact that Debian has everything packaged that makes it easier to manage. A RH admin will have to install more non-dist packages, and probably hasn't learned that rpmifying them instead of just make install is a good idea. -- Alan Shutko <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> - In a variety of flavors! David Z. Maze wrote: The one exception to this is the kernel; since it's reasonable to have multiple kernel versions installed, each is in its own package. You can manually install the most recent kernel package or not; things should still work fine. I just compiled 2.2.18 using make-kpkg and, when I installed it, it overwrote the old kernel (I would've prefered it to install it alongside the old one and have an extra entry in my grub menu). Is there a way to get dpkg to do this? (I'm very new to debian). I used dpkg -i package to install it.

I think I got it fixed. running the command depmod -a seems to have created the necessary file in the new modules folder.
