Bug#889109: konqueror: Almost unusable as web browser
Package: konqueror Version: 4:17.08.3-2 Severity: important Dear Maintainer, * What led up to the situation? Latest updates rendered konqueror almost unusable as a normal web browser * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? I started the browser and opened normally web sites; it's slower and when inserting data in forms it don't show the input (e.g. open google and go for a search, the search bar will remain blank even if it has been correctly filled, when focus is lost text is displayed). When browsing it uses higher CPU and sometimes freezese and it's needed to kill it. If needed I can try to debug, just tell me what tools to use. -- System Information: Debian Release: buster/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Foreign Architectures: i386 Kernel: Linux 4.14.0-3-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=it_IT.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=it_IT.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8), LANGUAGE= (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) LSM: AppArmor: enabled Versions of packages konqueror depends on: ii dolphin 4:17.08.3-2 ii install-info 6.5.0.dfsg.1-1 ii kio 5.37.0-2 ii libc62.26-4 ii libkf5archive5 5.37.0-2 ii libkf5bookmarks5 5.37.0-2 ii libkf5codecs55.37.0-2 ii libkf5completion55.37.0-2 ii libkf5configcore55.37.0-2 ii libkf5configgui5 5.37.0-2 ii libkf5configwidgets5 5.37.0-2 ii libkf5coreaddons55.37.0-3 ii libkf5dbusaddons55.37.0-2 ii libkf5i18n5 5.37.0-2 ii libkf5iconthemes55.37.0-2 ii libkf5itemviews5 5.37.0-2 ii libkf5jobwidgets55.37.0-2 ii libkf5kcmutils5 5.37.0-2 ii libkf5kdelibs4support5 5.37.0-2 ii libkf5khtml5 5.37.0-3 ii libkf5kiocore5 5.37.0-2 ii libkf5kiofilewidgets55.37.0-2 ii libkf5kiogui55.37.0-2 ii libkf5kiowidgets55.37.0-2 ii libkf5konq6 4:17.08.3-2 ii libkf5parts5 5.37.0-2 ii libkf5service-bin5.37.0-2 ii libkf5service5 5.37.0-2 ii libkf5sonnetcore55.37.0-2 ii libkf5sonnetui5 5.37.0-2 ii libkf5widgetsaddons5 5.37.0-2 ii libkf5windowsystem5 5.37.0-2 ii libkf5xmlgui55.37.0-2 ii libqt5core5a 5.9.2+dfsg-7 ii libqt5dbus5 5.9.2+dfsg-7 ii libqt5gui5 5.9.2+dfsg-7 ii libqt5network5 5.9.2+dfsg-7 ii libqt5printsupport5 5.9.2+dfsg-7 ii libqt5webenginewidgets5 5.9.2+dfsg-2 ii libqt5widgets5 5.9.2+dfsg-7 ii libqt5x11extras5 5.9.2-1 ii libqt5xml5 5.9.2+dfsg-7 ii libstdc++6 7.2.0-19 Versions of packages konqueror recommends: ii kfind 4:17.08.3-2 Versions of packages konqueror suggests: ii konq-plugins 4:17.08.3-2 -- no debconf information

Bug#692069: knotify: knotify crashes during desktop startup or shutdown.
Package: kde-runtime Followup-For: Bug #692069 Dear Maintainer, * What led up to the situation? After vlc update I received errors on vlccore libraries with normal dersktop use, I searched the web and it looks like the error was related to phonon-backend-vlc (I had the debian multimedia version installed, so this bug report can't be used with the one in official debian repository) * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? I uninstalled phonon-backend-vlc and installed phonon-backend-null; no more crashes but no more notify sound too (there is a warning during configure about this, it's ok and it was what I expected). Then I switched to phonon-backend-gstreamer and it works fine. Sound ok and no crash. * What was the outcome of this action? As I can see the bug is related to phonon-backend-vlc (the debian multimedia one in my system) and vlc is also the default backend; since changing backend solved my problem I suggest other people with the same problem to give a try with this solution and to report. Since the vlc problems is documented (using google there are lots of results) I suggest to change the default phonon-backend OR to write a warning in the configuration of phonon (something like in phonon-backend-null) so people know there must be this problem. -- System Information: Debian Release: jessie/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 3.14-2-686-pae (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=it_IT.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=it_IT.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages kde-runtime depends on: ii kde-runtime-data4:4.14.0-2 ii kdelibs5-plugins4:4.14.0-1 ii libasound2 1.0.28-1 ii libattica0.40.4.2-1 ii libc6 2.19-11 ii libcanberra00.30-2.1 ii libexiv2-13 0.24-4 ii libgcc1 1:4.9.1-14 ii libgcrypt20 1.6.2-3 ii libgpgme++2 4:4.14.0-1 ii libgpgme11 1.5.1-5 ii libjpeg88d1-1 ii libkactivities6 4:4.13.3-1 ii libkcmutils44:4.14.0-1 ii libkdeclarative54:4.14.0-1 ii libkdecore5 4:4.14.0-1 ii libkdesu5 4:4.14.0-1 ii libkdeui5 4:4.14.0-1 ii libkdewebkit5 4:4.14.0-1 ii libkdnssd4 4:4.14.0-1 ii libkemoticons4 4:4.14.0-1 ii libkfile4 4:4.14.0-1 ii libkhtml5 4:4.14.0-1 ii libkio5 4:4.14.0-1 ii libkmediaplayer44:4.14.0-1 ii libknewstuff3-4 4:4.14.0-1 ii libknotifyconfig4 4:4.14.0-1 ii libkparts4 4:4.14.0-1 ii libkpty44:4.14.0-1 ii libkxmlrpcclient4 4:4.14.0-1 ii libntrack-qt4-1 016-1.2 ii libopenexr6 1.6.1-8 ii libphonon4 4:4.8.0-1 ii libplasma3 4:4.14.0-1 ii libpulse-mainloop-glib0 5.0-6 ii libpulse0 5.0-6 ii libqt4-dbus 4:4.8.6+git64-g5dc8b2b+dfsg-2 ii libqt4-declarative 4:4.8.6+git64-g5dc8b2b+dfsg-2 ii libqt4-network 4:4.8.6+git64-g5dc8b2b+dfsg-2 ii libqt4-script 4:4.8.6+git64-g5dc8b2b+dfsg-2 ii libqt4-svg 4:4.8.6+git64-g5dc8b2b+dfsg-2 ii libqt4-xml 4:4.8.6+git64-g5dc8b2b+dfsg-2 ii libqtcore4 4:4.8.6+git64-g5dc8b2b+dfsg-2 ii libqtgui4 4:4.8.6+git64-g5dc8b2b+dfsg-2 ii libqtwebkit42.2.1-7.1 ii libsmbclient2:4.1.11+dfsg-1 ii libsolid4 4:4.14.0-1 ii libssh-gcrypt-4 0.6.3-3+b1 ii libstdc++6 4.9.1-14 ii libwebp50.4.1-1.2 ii libx11-62:1.6.2-3 ii libxcursor1 1:1.1.14-1 ii oxygen-icon-theme 4:4.14.0-1 ii perl5.20.0-6 ii phonon 4:4.8.0-1 ii plasma-scriptengine-javascript 4:4.14.0-2 kde-runtime recommends no packages. Nope, both are from debian multimedia > Asuming that both came from debian multimedia, is there anything in the vlc > of deb-multimedia repositories that is not in the debian repositories? I don't know about differences; I noticed vlc in deb-multimedia is newer but phonon-backend-vlc is at the same version and the version in multimedia repository is a little bigger and maybe due to non-free codec support. I'm adding in CC also Christian Marillat who could explain differnces and could be interested since he's maintaining the package. If you want I could install vlc and backend from the official repository to see if the bug is confirmed there, and eventually uploading a trace. > Happy hacking, -- Legge di Crisp sulla Pulizia Domestica: Dopo i primi quattro anni, lo sporco non peggiora. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-qt-kde-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Hi Maximiliano, I made some tries with various packages: * old configuration: vlc:i386 1:2.1.5-dmo1 and phonon-backend-vlc:i386 1:0.7.2-dmo1 (both from debian multimedia) caused crash on knotify * phonon-backend-vlc:i386 0.7.2-1 and vlc from debian repo gave no error * phonon-backend-vlc:i386 1:0.8.0-dmo2 (from multimedia) and vlc from debian gave no error * phonon-backend-vlc:i386 1:0.8.0-dmo2 and vlc:i386 1:2.2.0~pre3-dmo2 (both from multimedia) is giving no error. Maybe the bug as gone with new release on multimedia repository, I'm still testing it and I'll leave -dbg packages installed for a while (it could be useful for Christian). Now it could be useful to have a feedbak from people that opened the bug and from one who tried to solve, so I'm adding them in CC and I hope they can confirm. -- SCORFANO - Pesce che ha perduto i genitori. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-qt-kde-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". To close it, you'll need to use File -> Quit. It was disabled; there was only "show unread messages in systray" checked, I unchecked it for a try and nothing changed. > Even if you don't have the system tray icon enabled, could you please check > if this is reproducible for you when you use File -> Quit? Didn't work. Even enabling in systray and having right mouse click and exit removes kmail from systray but leaves the process still present. Updated the package from sid partially solved the problem: as said by Scott I had to run manually from a terminal (process was not running), then next login there was the process. Package: kde-window-manager Version: 4:5.3.2-3 Followup-For: Bug #793026 Dear Maintainer, The bug is still present but it can be reclassified since it's not important anymore: the symlink /usr/bin/kwin allowed kwin to start but, at least for me, window title bar was black and not usable; I had to install kwin-decoration-oxygen to have usable windows (at least one theme), but I still see some weird things: 1) In systemsettings -> windows decorations working themes are "black" (I'll attach a screenshot to show), the one visible is the non working one (black title bar) 2) Downloaded decorations don't work; I assume they're vastly for kde4, maybe not compatible for kde5, one should consider a way for filtering. Don't work mean the "black title" as above. 3) There is only one decoration theme, but maybe it's just a matter of time. -- System Information: Debian Release: stretch/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 4.0.0-2-686-pae (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=it_IT.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=it_IT.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) Versions of packages kde-window-manager depends on: ii kwin-x11 4:5.3.2-3 kde-window-manager recommends no packages. kde-window-manager suggests no packages. -- no debconf information

Bug#631391: [kdm] kdm show an uninitialized video memory or garbled images
This bug seems to be fixed for me since KDE version 4.8 (with compositing enabled) The problem it's a bit more complicated, I'll explain: The early versions of KDE 4 (4.3, 4.4) maybe didn't use the GPU acceleration to rendering basic effects, so this bug (if it's a bug) doesn't appears I think that the bug is to be found in libraries (used by KDE to enable compositing) and upgraded in the same time when KDE has been upgraded. To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-qt-kde-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". If I delete kdm.service file at the next reboot kdm works as expected. You can download the disk image of my VM from this link https://www.dropbox.com/s/nrcwkmbbbqlf5em/HDD4GB.7z?dl=0 I have run it with this command qemu-system-i386 -m 512 -enable-kvm -cpu athlon -hda HDD4GB.qcow2 I hope it helps you to understand where is the problem. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-qt-kde-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#755359: [kdm] systemd seem to fail to start display-manager.service
Why did you copy the extra kdm.service file into the systemd directory? Because you have told me to do it. see https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=755359#10 There is something that you are fundamentally doing wrong. I assume you do a minimal installation without using tasksel during the installation and then install the packages manually instead of using meta packages and apparently some essential package is missing? Because I had to recreate my problem with an image as small as possible. But don't digress anymore. I have explained my problem in the first message In journald log I see this message systemd[1]: Cannot add dependency job for unit display-manager.service, ignoring: Unit display-manager.service failed to load: No such file or directory. See system logs and 'systemctl status display-manager.service' for details. And your proposed solution was you could add the attached kdm.service file and add it to /lib/systemd/system and see if that fixes your problem. this test hasn't solved my problem has caused me a fail of KDM to start at the reboot. probably you have missed my premise at the top of the first message Dear maintainers, My machine (updated debian testing) has only KDM as display manager, it starts without problem after upgrading/trasition to systemd. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-qt-kde-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Il 10/01/2015 00:43, John Paul Adrian Glaubitz ha scritto: Ok, I thoroughly analyzed your qemu image and eventually found out that the symbolic link /etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service which points to /lib/systemd/system/kdm.service was missing. A simple ln -s /lib/systemd/system/kdm.service /etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service fixed it for me. I've no /etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service on my machines, very interesting Don't ask me why, but it was missing on your installation but not on mine. I have to figure that out and I have to read up on the documentation again to understand where this symlink comes from, I did *not* create it manually in my case. how many display managers are installed on your systems? if I install slim a soft link /etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service is created and it points to slim service you're saying that after a clean installation when only one display-manager (KDM) is installed a soft link /etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service is created for it ? right ? if you run a dpkg-reconfigure kdm to change the default DM and choose gdm3/slim the /etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service link is updated automatically? And if you re-choose KDM as default /etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service point again to kdm.service ? Also, the kdm.service that you put under /lib/systemd/system/ has a completely messed up formatting because you somehow messed it up during copy and paste. Try looking at the file with "cat /lib/systemd/system/kdm.service" and you understand what I mean. I don't know whether this had any impact though. It has been caused by a quick and dirty HTTP transfer PS: Next time you share such a qemu image, please don't set the locale and the keyboard layout to Italian. also I think it's impossible that a soft-link /etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service is created on a fresh install who only installs KDM as display-manager.service. Bug#755359: [kdm] systemd seem to fail to start display-manager.service
Il 10/01/2015 02:18, John Paul Adrian Glaubitz ha scritto: that this symlink is actually always created by the postinst script of the display manager (on Debian, Fedora uses the [Install] section of the .service file for that by setting an alias to display-manager.service) and looking at the source code of the kdm Debian package, this particular part is actually missing in the kdm package while it is present in the lightdm package. So it's actually a bit surprising that the link was installed on my test system. [...] It actually depends on which package you reconfigure. So, if you run "dpkg-reconfigure lightdm" (provided that lightdm is installed) and choose "kdm as your default DM, it should work. However, if you do that with "dpkg-reconfigure kdm" and choose "kdm" or any other DM for that matter, it shouldn't work. With my test I deduced that the soft-link is created only if another display-manager is configured, is choosed kdm as default and a kdm.service exists in the right path However, just to be sure I'm asking again: When you do a fresh installation and don't use a service file for kdm, kdm works and "systemctl status kdm.service" shows that it's running however you get the warning in the journal about the display-manager service, right? yes, right. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-qt-kde-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". I confirm that, after the latest upgrade (4.14 to 4.15), I am also affected by this bug Indeed, it really limits the usability of konqueror as file manager

Downgrading dolphin (to 4:15.4.3) but keeping konqueror at 4:15.08.1-1 allows to use dolphinpart again. During the update from 4:15.4.3 (working) to 4:15.08 (broken), dolphin was split to a separate src package and its libs were moved to a different folder (from /usr/lib/kde4 to /usr/lib/[ARCH]/qt5/plugins). Maybe it's looking for the dolphinpart.so in the wrong folder? However, just symlinking dolphinpart.so to the old path does not work for me

Bug#866865: (no subject)
I'm running a stable Debian and I can confirm, this bug happen to me always when I use sddm with openrc (or simply boot with sysvinit-core, sysv-rc and systemd-shim installed) With systemd reboot/poweroff/suspend options are "almost" always available (9 boot on 10)
Bug#964815: it looks like dprof2calltree cannot be distributed with a GPL-2 work

Personally I would agree that bundling is different from creating a "derived product". But, of course, there's some room for interpretation (especially in a court...). > >> So kcachegrind and any distributions' package would also need written > >> persmission from OmniTI Computer Consulting. Only if they want to use the "OmniTI Computer Consulting" company name (or the name of possible contributors) in order to endorse or promote their products. And only as long as these products are deemed to be derived from dprof2calltree, as said above. > >>... > > > > You are arguing the 3-Clause BSD License would be non-free? > > > > No, because dprof2calltree is modified 4-Clause BSD. Well, as far as I can say, the 4-clause BSD license is considered acceptable for Debian main. It is also [considered] a free software license by the FSF, although it is considered GPL-incompatible, ugly and strongly recommended against (for people who are choosing a license to release new software under). [considered]: <https://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html#OriginalBSD> > > > On Fri, Jul 10, 2020 at 03:53:48PM -0400, Nicholas D Steeves wrote: > >>... > >> At the very least, it appears that the advertising clauses make > >> dprof2calltree not DFSG-free, > > > > It does not: > > https://www.debian.org/legal/licenses/ > > > >> because they fail the "desert island test". > >>... > > > > It does not. > > > > If you choose to advertise the use of this software on your desert > > island, you have to include the acknowledgement in your advertisement. > > > > It fails the "desert island test" because > > 1. Any mention of the features or use of this software requires > user-facing display of the text "This product includes software > developed by OmniTI Computer Consulting". This needs to be done, in order to comply with the license. And it is the OAC (Obnoxious Advertising Clause), the actual reason why the 4-clause BSD license is GPL-incompatible. [OAC]: <https://www.gnu.org/licenses/bsd.html> > > 2. OmniTI Computer Consulting's name cannot be used to "without specific > prior written permission" It can be used in the limited text "This product includes software developed by OmniTI Computer Consulting", since the OAC mandates the display of this acknowledgment. You have specific prior written permission to display that acknowledgment: you have this permission in the very license text. Actually you have an obligation to do so. Without additional specific written permission, you cannot use the company name in other ways, to endorse or promote derived products. At least, this is the (not self-contradictory) interpretation that I believe it has always been intended for the 4-clause BSD license... > > The desert island does not have the paper snailmail service required to > fulfil #2 (4th clause of the license). I think the 4-clause BSD license does *not* fail the desert island test. However, it is clear that the 4-clause BSD license is GPL-incompatible. It would therefore be safer to not include 4-clause BSD licensed material in a package where other parts (or libraries) are under the GNU GPL. Even though, one might argue that the converter is just bundled with the rest, without having any derivation or linking relationship with GPL-licensed material... What I would recommend in this case is one of the following actions (in descending order of preference): • try and get in touch with OmniTI Computer Consulting and persuade them to re-license the dprof2calltree converter under the terms of the 3-clause BSD license (which does not include the deprecated OAC and is indeed GPL-compatible), but persuade them on the ground of GPL-incompatibility, deprecation, and practical issues of the OAC (not on the ground of a DFSG-freeness issue, since there is no such issue!) • try and find a GPL-compatible replacement for dprof2calltree • drop dprof2calltree from package kcachegrind, while waiting for a better resolution for the issue I hope this helps. Bug#673791: [kde-window-manager] Problem with basic desktop effects after upgrade
Package: kde-window-manager Version: 4:4.7.4-2+b1 Severity: normal I have a Debian testing which is upgraded frequently After an upgrade done the Monday of 14 May 2012, I experienced a problem with the effects on my KDE environment. For meet my paranoid needs and solve strange behaviours of video memory corruption (see bug #631391) I have disabled the desktop effects and I have added Option "Composite" "0" to my xorg.conf in the Extension section. In this configuration KDE provides me some basic effects (like the fade to grey on logout, the trasparency when I drag a file on the folder view, ecc ecc) without uses of GPU. This workaround has worked well up to a week ago. Now these basic effects as been lost and: 1) if I use Option "Composite" "0" systemsettings shows me this inedit message: "desktop effects are not available on this system due to the following technical issue: Required X Extensions (Xcomposite and Xdamage) are not available" 2) If I use Option "Composite" "1" (or comment it with an #) I'm able to enable the desktop effects but when this option is not checked I haven't the basic effects described above. I don't able to know what package has caused the problem (maybe x11-common or other similar...) but I'm sure that this happens after Sunday 13 May. I have attached a .txt files who contains the outout of which-pkg-broke kde-window-manager Thanks at the mantainers for their work. Bug#783371: kde4libs: FTBFS if pdebuild issued in source directory
Source: kde4libs Version: 4:4.14.2-5 Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, I tried to recompile the source package kde4libs with cowbuilder/pbuilder but I'm encountering the issue described in the following. The config file ~/.pbuilderrc is correctly configured and I already used cowbuilder to build other debian packages without problems. The source package is downloaded with `apt-get source kde4libs' from Jessie repository. Using: > $ sudo -E DIST=jessie ARCH=amd64 cowbuilder --build \ > kde4libs_4.14.2-5.dsc the building process succeeds. But using instead pdebuild against the source directory: > $ sudo -E DIST=jessie ARCH=amd64 pdebuild --pbuilder cowbuilder the build process fails [1] and it seems due to unsolvable build dependencies/conflicts. I did another try using pdbuilder without cowbuilder and with a clean local pbuilder chroot system, but using pdebuild against the source directory leads to the same error. I thought it was a problem with the build-deps so I did other tests trying different `--pbuildersatisfydepends' options and also manually installing the build-deps in the local pbuilder chroot system, but unfortunately the same issue remains. Bug#802811: libqt5x11extras5: causes konsole to segfault in libX11 on startup
Package: libqt5x11extras5 Followup-For: Bug #802811 Dear Maintainer, I confirm this problem too. After upgrading libqt5x11extras5 to 5.5.1-2 today on Stretch, sddm doesn't start and the Plasma 5 session doesn't start either, also if launched with another display manager. Using openbox I also found out that Kate and Konsole segfault. Downgrading libqt5x11extras5 to 5.4.2-2+b1 is a workaround that prevents this issue. This is what dmesg shows when Plasma 5 starts and immediately fails: drkonqi[1036]: segfault at 0 ip 7f54f7395a74 sp 7fffc23c0330 error 4 in libxcb.so.1.1.0[7f54f738b000+21000] drkonqi[1043]: segfault at 0 ip 7f18756c9a74 sp 7ffd441dc380 error 4 in libxcb.so.1.1.0[7f18756bf000+21000] drkonqi[1048]: segfault at 0 ip 7fd1d3ca6a74 sp 7fff5846ea10 error 4 in libxcb.so.1.1.0[7fd1d3c9c000+21000] Best regards Francesco -- System Information: Debian Release: stretch/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Foreign Architectures: i386 Kernel: Linux 4.2.0-1-amd64 (SMP w/8 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=it_IT.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=it_IT.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) Versions of packages libqt5x11extras5 depends on: ii libc6 2.19-22 ii libqt5core5a 5.4.2+dfsg-9 ii libqt5gui55.4.2+dfsg-9 libqt5x11extras5 recommends no packages. libqt5x11extras5 suggests no packages. -- no debconf information
Bug#861495: plasma-discover: recommend apt-config-auto-update instead of software-properties-kde
Package: plasma-discover Version: 5.8.5-3 Severity: wishlist Dear Maintainer, plasma-discover recommends software-properties-kde, a package that allows via GUI to: - manage the entries in the sources.list - set periodic update and automatic upgrades - opt in/out from the popularity contest However the software-properties-* packages still have important and old bugs unresolved that undermine the user experience and, by default, do not enable automatic updates when installed. A better alternative could be the installation of plasma-discover with apt-config-auto-update instead, which provides "configuration snippets for the Apt package manager to have it automatically update its package cache". In this way: - the sources.list can still be managed using plasma-discover directly - automatic updates are enabled by default Despite the lack of a couple of features provided by software-properties-kde, this configuration could be better for a basic installation. If I issue an "apt update" I see that discover sees the updated cache. If so, I don't see why not use apt-config-auto-update, it provides a useful feature that I think many users expect by default. > The software-properties-kde application allows configuring the update > interval (does nothing here...) but also allows people to edit the > software sources installed on the system. What benefits if I may ask? The sources.list can be edited already in plasma-discover without s-p-kde, the periodic updates are broken if I use discover as you say, and what remains is the possibility to choose if automatically install security updates (but I suppose unattended-upgrades does exactly that) or download all the updates in background or just notify about it. Thank you. Regards Francesco

On 30/04/17 00:41:17 CEST, Matthias Klumpp wrote: > PackageKit aleady updates the cache periodically By default? I have different machines with Stretch and the default kde installation, there was no evidence ever that that happened automatically. I always had to to check for updates manually in plasma-discover. Of course, I was able to set the automatic update via s-p-kde but it wasn't set by default. > there is no point in having another tool trying to do the same in the > background. The only thing that this might end in is two things fighting over > the APT database lock in the background, which is undesired. My suggestion was in fact to recommend apt-config-auto-update *instead of* s-p-kde. About this point, what should be the default mechanism in Debian to update the cache and/or enable automatic updates? Something related to APT or PackageKit only? The manuals still suggest to use and configure apt to do that (mentioning apticron, apt-config-auto-update and unattend-upgrades for the convenience of the users). And by the way, s-p-kde does exactly that by (also?) writing the file /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/10periodic. This is why I don't understand why the two packages cannot be interchangeable. > > What benefits if I may ask? The sources.list can be edited already in > > plasma-discover without s-p-kde, > > You can only remove sources, you can't add or edit them You're right. But I just tried to edit my sources with s-p-kde. It crashes when adding new sources and it automatically enables them and adds a commented deb-src line. I had to manually check for errors my sources.list anyway. Also, the interface is misleading due to bug 443643 [1] (a bug of 10 years ago). In this way it is still better to edit the sources.list with a text editor. > or look at which GPG keys ou have installed for them on your system I don't know if you're talking about the same functionality provided by apt-key, but s-p-kde simply displays nothing under "Trusted software providers", while apt-key shows correctly all the keys. > You can also not enable/disable backports or updates via a simple click. Maybe yes but still the interface is misleading due to bug 721662 [2]. > > and what remains is the possibility to choose if > > automatically install security updates (but I suppose unattended-upgrades > > does exactly that) or download all the updates in background or just > > notify about it. > > These are exactly the features that might be broken, as they rely on > other tools and s-p-kde doesn't interface well with PackageKit. > Everything else works. Well, because of the issues above, I'm not convinced of the benefits of this package. Right now I still think that the updates can be managed better by editing the proper files in /etc/apt/ and that the usage of apt-config-auto- update and unattended-upgrades provides a better setting for the average user. Thank you for the useful clarifications and for your time. Regards Francesco [1] https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=443643 [2] https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=721662
Bug#697554: kdeartwork: debian/copyright file seems to be outdated and/or incomplete
Source: kdeartwork Version: 4:4.8.4-2 Severity: serious Justification: Policy 2.3 Hello and thanks for maintaining this package! It seems to me that the debian/copyright file is outdated and/or incomplete. For instance: (A) the debian/copyright file talks about "Files under kworldclock/", but I couldn't find this directory in the source package: could you please confirm that those files have been dropped from the package? this is really important, as their DFSG-freeness is not clear to me... (B) the source package seems to include files under the WeatherWallpapers/ , HighResolutionWallpapers/ , and aurorae/ , but I cannot see any verbatim copy of their copyright information and distribution licenses in the debian/copyright file: could you please confirm that I am not overlooking anything? These issues (and possibly others), if confirmed, should be fixed by updating the debian/copyright file to reflect the current content of the package. Please let me know.
