Bug#974829: Another problem with 4.1-8 → 4.1-9 update

2020-11-15 Thread David
Not sure if it's exactly related, but the 4.1-8 → 4.1-9 mdadm update causes
grub and initramfs-tools to fail. eg:

Partitioning setup interface is particularly clumsy and always has
been. Not intuitive. We have to "guess" at the correct answers and run
it through until it fails (after trying to boot), then go back and try
the next "guess" hoping that will work. Maybe use a graphical partition
setup with choices selected from the (visible) option tree and allow a
description of each choice and sub-choice when the user hovers the
mouse. Most everything else is self-explanatory and you guys have done
a wonderful job with it!

Sorry for the trouble. I (and the tests) admittedly only test the
non-static zsh. And except for some special lookups known to be not
possible with static compiled binaries, I also don't expect any
difference in functionality with zsh-static.

Thank you both so much for looking into it! And Vincent noticing that
/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6 is being opened and mapped into memory
is very eye opening, for a static binary!

Please forgive my ignorange in the automated test suites, but perhaps
for a future test, would verifying the expected exit status of these
commands help intercept this (and any other) weird problem? :-)

  zsh-static -f -c "exit 0"
  zsh-static -f -c "exit 1"

Now for a more thorough test: Is it possible (or even desireable?) to
test the binary to verify it really is statically linked? Perhaps grep
strace output looking for potential evidence of .so files getting opened
in some lib directory?

strace zsh-static -f -c "exit 0" 2>&1 | grep
'^open[a-zA-Z0-9_]*(.*"[^"]*lib.*\.so\>[^"]*"'

openat(AT_FDCWD, "/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libnss_compat.so.2",
O_RDONLY|O_CLOEXEC) = 11
openat(AT_FDCWD, "/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6", O_RDONLY|O_CLOEXEC) = 11
openat(AT_FDCWD, "/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2",
O_RDONLY|O_CLOEXEC) = 11

echo $?

0

For comparison, busybox is statically linked:

strace /bin/busybox -f -c "exit 0" 2>&1 | grep '^open[a-zA-Z0-9_]*(.*"[^"]*lib.*\.so\>[^"]*"'
echo $?

1

(And I also just tested a couple small C programs invoking printf and
compiled with and without "-static".)

There's gotta be a better test to detect run-time opening of shared
libraries. (My regex of looking for open...("... .so ...") feels
hackish.)

Yes, I actually uploaded one today (#942313). However that seems to be broken
by libwxsqlite3-3.0-dev, which still Depends on the GTK+2 wx dev package. As a
result both flavours are installed, and Alternatives selects the GTK+2 one.
I'll report this bug.

It would be great if it could be delayed until this is sorted out.

I too have no sound since upgrading alsa packages today. All the files
linked to from /etc/alsa/conf.d/ to /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf.d/ do not
exist. This is on a Devuan PC. Three other Debian PCs do NOT have
an /etc/alsa/conf.d/ folder but work OK. They have not been updated
today.

My apologies for the delay in replying. While the fix itself was easy, I wanted
to incorporate it into the forthcoming 4pane release, avoiding the hassle of an
extra RFS.

I've now done this and uploaded it to mentors
(https://mentors.debian.net/package/4pane/ and
https://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/4/4pane/4pane_8.0-1.dsc). However
that gives only a few days for a sponsor to appear before 4pane is autoremoved
on 8/11. So if you, or someone you know, would be able to do this I'd be most
grateful. Or if it's possible to delay the autoremoval...

David

Argh! I'd not noticed that. Now fixed and re-uploaded.

I didn't add libwxgtk3.0-gtk3-dev to Build-Conflicts, but it doesn't seem to be
necessary: a test build picked the 3.2-dev even though both were present.
However I can easily do so if you prefer.

Bug#867560: netfilter-persistent fails randomly during boot; restarting later works

2017-07-07 Thread David
Package: netfilter-persistent
Version: 1.0.4+nmu2
Severity: grave
Tags: security
Justification: renders package unusable

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?

Upgrading from jessie to stretch.

On two Debian systems, netfilter-persistent worked fine in jessie but randomly
fails to load rules.v4 and/or rules.v6 during boot. Most of the time, at
least one of these fails. Restarting later works fine.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

1) # apt-get purge iptables-persistent netfilter-persistent && apt-get
install iptables-persistent

2) Edit /usr/share/netfilter-persistent/plugins.d/15-ip4tables and
/usr/share/netfilter-persistent/plugins.d/25-ip6tables so
/sbin/ip(6)tables-restore writes errors to a file instead of /dev/null

3) # systemctl restart netfilter-persistent

   * What was the outcome of this action?

1) No effect.

2)
iptables-restore: line 33 failed
ip6tables-restore: line 25 failed
(These are the last lines of rules.v4 and rules.v6, each saying
"COMMIT", respectively.)

3) Works (until next reboot).

Since "systemctl restart netfilter-persistent" works just fine, I think it
might have to do with the patch suggested in #819693. Starting with
stretch, the unit file switched from network.target to network-pre.target.
While network-pre.target is in theory intended for firewall use, I think
network-pre.target might make it impossible to reference specific interfaces
within iptables rules (e.g. "-A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT").

Bug#379083: libpam-ccreds: simply doesn't work

2006-07-20 Thread david
Package: libpam-ccreds
Version: 3-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

It simply doesn't work. I installed it, configured pam according to the
instructions, and logged off and back on to establish my creds. At no
point does it write to /var/cache/.security.db, or even (as far as my
meager strace skills tell me) does it try to. I can manually create
some cached creds using cc_test, but pam doesn't attempt to use them.
I have been testing this by ssh'ing in, and at intervals removing the
network cable from the computer.

My pam conf, matching the docs exactly as far as I can tell.

common-auth:

auth [user_unknown=ignore default=done] pam_unix.so
auth [authinfo_unavail=ignore success=1 default=2] pam_ldap.so
try_first_pass
auth [default=done] pam_ccreds.so action=validate use_first_pass
auth [default=done] pam_ccreds.so action=store
auth [default=bad] pam_ccreds.so action=update

ldap authentication works on the system perfectly, with nscd and
nss-updatedb both caching authorization data as designed.

Any and all other information needs furnished upon request.

Bug#463860: No wifis detected

2008-02-03 Thread David
Package: atl2-modules-2.6.24-1-686
Version: 2.6.24+2.0.3-1
Severity: grave

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

Although ath5k is loaded, iwlist detects no wifis.

Other people have the same problem:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=463353 (the latter bug is
for madwifi, and people say that ath5k is not yet an alternative to madwifi
because of exactly the problem I am submitting now).

Thank you

Bug#463353: Latest snapshot

2008-02-03 Thread David
I tried the upstream version and fails to compile for the "architecture
mismatch".

Then, I tried the latest snapshot (3 February 2008) and builds smoothly, and
seems to work OK (after reboot).

Please consider forwarding this upstream (I haven't found anything in upstream's
bugzilla, and I'm posting here so that Debian users can have a reference if a
similar bug occurs).

I hope I'm not the only one to see this bug. :( (this is a showstopper for me;
I must change MUA if the behavior is this :( -- and I really like claws-mail)

My kernel information can be found in `System Information' below.

I'll try with a newer packaged kernel (I'm not using .24 yet because it has
some problems with my ACPI), and I'll also try installing older versions of
claws-mail. I'll report everything to this bug report.

Thanks,
David

(sorry for the bad formatting -- I'm using Gmail's web interface to write this.)

[1] "suddenly" here means that yes, I have *NOT* installed anything
strange, nor did some strange operations with claws-mail
configuration.

Bug#433790: reportbug-ng: Freezes when fetching bugreports

2007-07-19 Thread David
Package: reportbug-ng
Version: 0.2007.07.18
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

When I enter the name of a package, Reportbug NG stays

"Fetching bugreports for package reportbug-ng, please wait"

forever and ever.

I also tried with other packages, and the same.

My network is behind a proxy, but previous versions of reportbug-ng used to
work.

There might be something wrong with the proxy-feature I've enabled a few

versions ago. Is the http_proxy environment variable set accordingly?
Please paste the output of

  echo $http_proxy

It is correct:

$ echo $http_proxy
http://wwwcache..**.**:80**/

You should also try to start rng with the http_proxy variable temporary
unset:

  http_proxy='' rng

and tell me if this works for you.

No, it doesn't work

By the way, if you allow me to abuse, two wishes (basically, two
capabilities of reportbug missing in reportbug-ng):

a) Remind what critical, grave, etc means anytime we report a bug.
b) Allow to send directly through an SMTP, and from the email address we
type, without an email application (very useful if we use a gmail account)

Cheers,

David

Bug#434509: Depends on libconfhelper-perl, but this package has been removed

libconfhelper-perl has been removed from sid, so I see it in Synaptic under
the "local or obsolete" section. Nevertheless, when trying to remove it, it
asks to remove mplayer as well.

Bug#437923: Touchpad doesn't work at all

2007-08-14 Thread David
Package: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics
Version: 0.14.7~git20070517-2
Severity: grave

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

The touchpad used to work. I usually use a USB mouse, so maybe it took a
longtime for me to realise.

Today I touched the mouse and no reply at all, not to the buttons either. I
though it was because I had the USB mouse plugged in, so I thought it was a
good idea. But I unplugged the USB mouse and, still, no response at all on
the touchpad.

The package libboost-python1.34.0 has been removed from sid, so it lays in

prompts me to remove: kde, kde-amusements, kdeedu and kig. That is because

Bug#452377: A package marked for reinstall, if conflicting, is removed *without warning*

2007-11-22 Thread David
Package: apt
Version: 0.7.9
Severity: grave

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

Today, in sid, I marked for upgrade xserver-xorg-core (2:1.4-3) to 2:
1.4.1~git20071119-1. Synaptic asked to remove xserver-xorg-input-all (1:
7.3+6) and xserver-xorg-input-wacom (0.7.7.11-1). Before committing changes,
I marked the two last for reinstall (yes, this is a dirty trick, but
sometimes works in sid).

So I clicked on "apply", SYNAPTIC DID NOT WARN THAT ANYTHING WAS GOING TO BE
REMOVED, but, actually, xserver-xorg-core was upgraded, and
xserver-xorg-input-all and xserver-xorg-input-wacom were removed.

Still, in synaptic history I see:

Upgraded the following packages:
xserver-xorg-core (2:1.4-3) to 2:1.4.1~git20071119-1

Reinstalled the following packages:
xserver-xorg-input-all (1:7.3+6)
xserver-xorg-input-wacom (0.7.7.11-1)

I think this is grave because you may remove important packages, and
therefore break the system, WITHOUT ANY SINGLE WARNING.

2007-10-16 Thread David

It is not possible to upgrade gimp because apt wants to uninstall

Bug#446885: closed by Ari Pollak <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> (Re: Bug#446885: Broken dependency related to gimp-print)

2007-10-17 Thread David
Thank you for the reply. So the move is to upgrade gimp and, as a result,
uninstall gimp-print. Is it OK?

The question is: is it necessary to install gimp-gutenprint (it is in the
repository since yesterday)? When is gimp-gutenprint necessary?

Thank you

Bug#447731: Scroll keys do not work any more

2007-10-23 Thread David
Package: kde-i18n-engb
Version: 4:3.5.8-1
Severity: grave

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

I encountered two problems today with the keyboard: one solvable and another
not solvable AFAIK. None of them appear when Ctrl+Alt+F1

Although my KDE is in British English, my keyboard layout was another one.
Today, the layout in KDE (not when Ctrl+Alt+F1) switched to UK layout. I
solved it by defining two layouts in the KDE Control Centre, but this is
still a bug that should be fixed.

On the other hand, for both layouts (including the UK layout), *the scroll
keys do not work*. "Right", "left" and "down" do nothing. "Up" launches
Ksnapshot. THIS IS THE GRAVE BUG. It does not appear when Ctrl+Alt+F1.

Bug#458443: Not fixed yet

2008-01-10 Thread David
reopen 458443
thanks

I am afraid it is not fixed. There is a circular dependence problem, I
think.

Basically, mono-gac cannot be configured because some files provided by
libmono-addins0.2-cil are missing.

On the other hand, libmono-addins0.2-cil fails because of mono-runtime,
mono-runtime fails because of mono-gac, and now we come back to the line
above.

Here the output:

Bug#427494: fglrx-driver: Version 8.37.6-1: no screen found

2007-06-04 Thread David
Package: fglrx-driver
Version: 8.37.6-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

The X server does not start, it reads "no screen found". Running
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and changing
nothing except "ati" instead of "fglrx", fixes the problem.

I would be very happy with the ati driver if Beryl worked on that, but it does
not :-(

By the way, it happens on my computer at work, so I cannot play around much. I
can only provide information with my current settings (i.e, with the
ati driver).

The graphic card is Radeon 9200 SE, and the monitor Philips 170B.

Exactly. Maybe this bug should be reasigned to linux-image-2.6-686.

But, still, linux-image-686 should change the version number...

I too encountered this problem this morning on 2 PCs running Unstable.

On one PC:

ecj, which also upgrades libecj-java consistently generates this error.

The following were all upgradable individually but generated the error when I
tried to upgrade them all together. (I was trying to find out which packages
were causing the problem)

apache2-utils (2.2.4-3) to 2.2.6-1

elisa (0.1.7-2) to 0.3.1-2  }

libgsf-1-common (1.14.6-1) to 1.14.7-1 }

libsqlite0 (2.8.17-2) to 2.8.17-2.1   }
libsqlite0-dev (2.8.17-2) to 2.8.17-2.1}

mount (2.13-2) to 2.13-3

pdfedit (0.3.1-1) to 0.3.2-1

util-linux (2.13-2) to 2.13-3

On the other PC the following generated the error when I tried upgrading them
together:

texlive-base, texlive-base-bin, texlive-common, texlive-fonts recommended.

However these upgraded OK yesterday on the first machine.

I have not done any more on the second PC and am willing to test any
procedures you may suggest.

Bug#444572: Dependency libsmp10 has been removed from sid

2007-09-29 Thread David
I did not know about the existence of binNMU. Very interesting for sid,
where transition periods may take several days :-)

I read the wiki but I do not have it clear yet. May you post the mail you
sent to request the binNMU? (I suppose I can abstract the information and
manage to request a binNMU in next cases).

Will the binNMU be posted to you, or uploaded into the repository?

By the way, I had no problem in this case because I had libsmp10 as "local
or obsolete". Still, I think it is useful to report the bug because
sometimes the maintainers did not realise. What do you think?

Thank you

Bug#485938: [compiz-core] Enforces to remove kscreensaver-xsavers

2008-06-12 Thread David
Package: compiz-core
Version: 0.7.4-1
Severity: serious

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

Last version conflicts with xscreensaver-data-extra, but
kscreensaver-xsavers depends on xscreensaver-data-extra. I am a KDE user so
I am not willing to remove kscreensaver-xsavers, I'd rather remove compiz
(yes, regard it as a threaten :-) ).

Furthermore, even if kscreensaver-xsavers did not depend on
xscreensaver-data-extra, I would not remove the latter either, because they
are so cute (although they work so badly and break the X server, at least at
the present time :-) ... :-) ).

Why the conflict of compiz-core with xscreensaver-data-extra? Can't it be
fixed?

Bug#477482: [cupsys-bsd] Common file with cupsys

2008-04-23 Thread David
Package: cupsys-bsd
Version: 1.3.7-4
Severity: grave

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

Today, when upgrading libwine-print, apt told me to install cupsys-bsd and
remove lpr. OK. But, when committing changes, an error occurred:

E: /var/cache/apt/archives/cupsys-bsd_1.3.7-4_i386.deb: trying to overwrite
`/usr/lib/cups/daemon/cups-lpd', which is also in package cupsys.

Please fix ASAP, now my package list is broken and I can do nothing with apt
:-(

Thank you

Bug#478091: [tracker] Use odt2txt instead of the removed o3read

2008-04-26 Thread David
Package: tracker
Version: 0.6.6-1+b1
Severity: serious

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

tracker uses o3read to extract the text of OpenOffice documents. In fact,
o3read is in the recommendation list of tracker.

Nevertheless, o3read has been dropped from the repository in favour of
odt2txt: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=477311(furthermore,
o3read does not work with the new OpenOffice format).

Bug#479795: [geany] After upgrade, the default output is a.out, but the execution script links to ./programme

2008-05-06 Thread David
Package: geany
Version: 0.14-1
Severity: grave

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

This bug was introduced after upgrading. Before that, when I compiled
"programme.c", the default output was "programme". After the upgrade, the
default output is "a.out" but the execution script that you run with build
-> execute links to "./programme"

Now I hear you asking: "OK, but it is very easy to fix; why did you submit
this bug as grave?". Because it may go unnoticed and have fatal
consequences: let us suppose that an engineer working on rocket science
often runs numerical simulations. He upgraded geany today, he opens a piece
of code he wrote last week, *changes some parameters*, selects build ->
build and build -> execute. He *did not notice anything, but he actually ran
the executable of last week (named "programme") instead of the intended one
(named "a.out") with the old parameters* Now the rocket is built and it
simply does not work :-)

Something similar to this case (but with less grave consequences :-) )
happened to me today: I noticed that the executable was running with another
values for the parameters, and it was driving me bananas :-)

Bug#479795: [geany] After upgrade, the default output is a.out, but the execution script links to ./programme

2008-05-07 Thread David
So, what is the default build command now? Maybe it is better than my
current one :-)

Yes, I changed the default build command to add the "-g3 -lm" flags. The
funny thing is that the upgrade kept my modification (the "-g3 -lm" flags)
but destroyed the part that was inside the default command (-o "%e"). If it
were the other way round, it would be as usual, but this way is strange...

> What do you suggest to solve the problem?
> It's not really possible anymore, IMO.

On the one hand, can't the mismatch between the gcc output and the execution
script be fixed?.

On the other hand, I would suggest the upload of a new revision to prevent
the bug from affecting sid users that have not upgraded geany yet, and
before this version of geany migrates to testing.

> Unfortunately, I missed to note
> that in the release announcement, not sure if it would have changed
> anything.

I am not sure about the effectiveness of this. Nobody reads the release
notes, because it is actually impossible because of the limitation of 24
hours per day :-)

Thank you

Bug#479820: [tracker] Can't open database, out of memory

2008-05-07 Thread David
Thank you.

I would say that this does not fix the problem. I cannot assure that because
I did the following:

1) Executed this command, it started OK.
2) I needed to reboot the computer, but I made it "clean", and without
closing the console where the reindexing was running.
3) After the reboot, trackerd was running OK. Although I was not able to see
the search results because, as the search tool read, the indexing was in
progress.
4) After some time, and without apparent reason, trackerd died and, when
trying to start it, the same problem :-(

Regards.

Bug#528365: vlc: VLC has serious problems showing xvid and h264 videos

2009-05-12 Thread David
Hi.

Thanks! It looked like my nvidia video drivers weren't setup in
xorg.conf (I removed my xorg.conf previously). After setting up
xorg.conf with 'nvidia-xconfig' and restarting kdm, xvinfo now reports
info about my card (it said it couldn't find an adaptor before), and
the Sid version of VLC displays correctly.

My problem is fixed, but I think this means that newer versions of VLC
may have problems rendering videos in 'x11' mode, at least with my
video card.

David.

Bug#526381: [locales] For some reason not configured after upgrade

2009-04-30 Thread David
Package: locales
Version: 2.9-9
Severity: grave

I upgraded locales (and other packages) today. I saw no problem in
principle. Afterwards, I installed some other packages (all the time with
synaptic), and I obtained in the output "E locales subprocess script killed
by signal Aborted" and, of course, any subsequent installation left the
packages half configured (that is why I think the severity is grave).

"dpkg --configure locales" did the job OK. And "apt-get -f install" seemed
to fix things.

Bug#526381: Still giving problems

2009-04-30 Thread David
After rebooting, I installed a new package with synaptic and again a problem
with half-installed. The output was more cryptic: something about glib and
null pointers... I cannot copy it because it is not stored in dpkg's logs.

Running apt-get -f install on the console seemed to fix things.

Bug#526381: Still giving problems

2009-04-30 Thread David
OK, I will upgrade the system next time via apt (instead of synaptic) so I
can copy and paste the output. But I may not have access to this computer
for several days. Isn't there any other sid user than can reproduce the
problem?

I was also setting an environmental variable in /etc/rc.local,
/etc/environment and /etc/bash.bashrc . It should not influence, because I
reverted the changes before having the problem, the only differences could
be at maximim some extra blank lines in those files. But who knows...

The second package was texlive-lang-spanish, and I had nothing about locales
in the output, just the cryptic message I mentioned before. It may even be
two different bugs in glib, but it would be much coincidence...

Yes, it looks to be synaptic. Any package that you install or upgrade via
synaptic is not correctly configured. Furthermore, apt-get -f install fixes
it.

Also, if you install directly with apt-get, the problem is not found.

Thank you.

Bug#521198: php5-suhosin nulls mysql update parameters and allows update to continue

2009-03-25 Thread David
Package: php5-suhosin
Version: 0.9.27-1
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software

Suhosin nulls the parameters of a very large mysql update resulting in
null values being submitted to the database, where data was expected.

It seems more reasonable that Suhosin would instead kill the update queries
if it considers them to be an attack. And log it so the admin can make
appropriate changes.

As it is, it is highly destructive, and not immediately apparent when
suhosin is first installed/updated. It only appears later when the end-users
generate a large enough update. A ticking time bomb for the database.

This has been certainly more destructive to me in the last week, than any
"attack" in the last 10 years.

Until this is resolved I would suggest Suhosin be enabled in simulation
mode by default.

Thank you,

David

Bug#517424: firestarter: Doesn't start: "A proper configuration for Firestarter was not found"

2009-02-27 Thread David
Package: firestarter
Version: 1.0.3-7
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

This has happened to me in two different computers running sid, so I assume
that "grave" is the correct severity. The problem started IIRC on Monday
23 Feb 2009, so it may come from an upgrade in sid in Monday or Sunday.

If I try to start firestarter, even from the console, I get no console output,
and the following window opens:

"A proper configuration for Firestarter was not found. If you are running
Firestarter from the directory you built it in, run 'make
install-data-local' to install a configuration, or simply 'make install' to
install the whole program.

Firestarter will now close."

I tried removing the package (including configuration files) and reinstalling
it, but the problem persisted. The command

gconftool-2 --install-schema-file /usr/share/gconf/schemas/firestarter.schemas

did not work either. The network works OK, by the way.

Thank you.

Bug#536077: Flag [arch=i386] in sources.list behaves as though ignored

2009-07-07 Thread David
Package: ia32-apt-get
Version: 22
Severity: grave

I cannot install skype via ia32-apt-get. The line in my sources.list is:

deb [arch=i386] http://download.skype.com/linux/repos/debian/ stable
non-free

and I ran /usr/share/ia32-apt-get/convert-all-sources.list

But ia32-apt-get behaves as though it were ignoring the flag [arch=i386],
because although "ia32-apt-get update" does not complain about skype's
repository, "ia32-apt-get install skype" cannot download the package.

I solved the issue by downloading the .deb from skype's site, and

# ia32-dpkg -i skype-debian_2.0.0.72-1_i386.deb
# ia32-apt-get -f install

Thank you,

Bug#421490: Causes massive CPU load when enabled

2007-04-29 Thread David

Package: xmms-singit
Version: 0.1.28+dfsg-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

After installing & enabling the xmms-singit package, XMMS starts taking 99% CPU
usage (according to top). Even when XMMS is doing nothing (ie started up
but not started playing music). This load also causes XMMS and the X
system to become unresponsive (if I don't kill it fast enough under X
I have to switch over to a text terminal to kill XMMS since X becomes
unusable).

This makes xmms-singit unusable for me.

Also, trying to disable the xmms-singit plugin in the XMMS
configuration window causes XMMS
to crash. I have to remove the xmms-singit package to get a usable XMMS.

Bug#552182: xorg: Impossible to load desktop (at least kde or xfce)

2009-10-23 Thread David
Package: xorg
Version: 1:7.4+4
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software

Today I upgraded sid (i.e., "from sid to sid") after having being about one
month away from my computer. After rebooting, the boot process complaint
that the root device was damaged, but fsck gave an error as well (maybe this
has nothing to do with the bug, but just in case). After rebooting, things
were apparently OK. But further problems: some application launched in KDE4,
such as icedove or openoffice, could not write to my home directory or to
/tmp (although my user had writing permissions), so such applications were
useless (maybe this has nothing to do with the bug, but just in case).

I tried rebooting and then everything broke. The login manager (kdm, then
gdm) showed, I could make the log in, the screen went black for a second (as
though the desktop were starting) but then back to the login manager (as
though the initialization of the desktop had failed). The login was OK
because I tried introducing a wrong password and the login manager
complaint.

I had the same problem with kdm and gdm, and when trying to start kde or
xfce. I had the same problem both with the nvidia and nv drivers. I could
successfully log in in a text terminal, by the way.

I tried enquiring on the IRC chat, and although several unhappy people
treated me as though I were stupid, they gave me the clue to see that the
problem was in the X server. I am attaching Xorg.0.log.

I am running reportbug after having started with an OpenSuse LiveCD and made
chroot (so I am suppressing the information about the kernel, locales, etc,
to prevent confusion). I am afraid I will not be able to provide further
information, because I need the computer working so (unless you are so
clever to fix the bug by my next working day :-) ) I will format.

Regards,

David

Bug#601617: User Viewpoint

2010-10-30 Thread david
"Unless anybody has a better idea, in the next upload (is there any
hurry?) I will move the library back to /usr for the time being."

From a user viewpoint it means skipping this version and having the packages
hanging around in the "installed, upgradeable" section of Synaptic.

Neither of which is a good thing :-(

Bug#592644: openerp-server: no module named module

2010-08-11 Thread David
Package: openerp-server
Version: 5.0.12-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

After upgrading from 5.0.11 (stable) to 5.0.12-1 including upgrade of all other
packages (except those held back by host provider / confixx default) I
cannot use the openerp-server anymore. I tried for hours to find a solutions or
hints in the net and openerp-forums but no success. I can start the server from
the commandline as user openerp
but when I try to connect to a database (not mattering which, but they run on
another backup system without
problem on 5.0.12 (without -1) and lenny sid) I get an error "no module named

I continued to use the old ones.

I have upgraded all modules before upgrading - without complaints.

Bug#582953: Kmail deleted all my local mail

2011-09-15 Thread David
Hi there, I just had a very unpleasant experience with kmail.

I searched the Debian BTS, and this seems to be the closest report, so
my report over here.

I opened kmail this morning, and all my mails were gone. Checked the
~/.kde/share/apps/kmail folder, and basically empty, rather than the
700 MB of mail files I normally have there.

Fortunately I had made a backup from a few days ago, so I restored that.

Started kmail up again, and it deleted all those mails again during
startup. WTH?

Well, there are some unsual things on my side that are contributing
towards this.

1. My ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail folder is really a symlink to a
secondary encrypted location (an encfs directory).

2. I sometimes forget to mount that encfs share before starting kmail.
Normally in this case, kmail annoyingly removes my symlinks, and makes
new folders, so I have to go and tidy up after it to get to my mail
again. Really annoying.

3. My kmail settings files over here, aren't symlinks into an
encrypted location:

 ~/.kde/share/config/kmail*

So basically in this case, I started kmail up (before mounting my
crypt area), and it did it's normal annoying thing with my
~/.kde/share/apps/kmail symlink.

So I did my normal routine of mounting my crypt area, moving the new
'kmail' directory out of the way, restoring my symlink, and then
starting kmail.

After which, kmail promptly proceeded to delete all my mails under
~/.kde/share/apps/kmail (in my crypt area).

And it did the same again, when I restored ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail
from my encrypted offsite backup drive

What I _think_ is happening here is this:

1. kmail starts up, and sees that ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail looks
weird, so it removes it and makes a new folder

(WTH number 1, but I'm used to that by now).

2. It then proceeds to make a new set of profile settings under
~/.kde/share/config/kmail*, replacing my old settings

(WTH number 2 - now I'd need to manually re-create those settings, or
restore from backups)

3. Later, when I replace the new ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail with a
symlink to my encfs directory, and then start up kmail again, it sees
that my new ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail directory contents are now
inconsistent with the "~/.kde/share/config/kmail*" settings files, and
then kindly proceeds to tidy things up, to match the config files -
deleting my 700 MB of mails, not just once (initially), but a second
time too, when I tried to restore from backups and test it again.

This is the biggest WTH. Kmail should never delete all the local mail
files like that automatically, in an attempt to tidy things up to
match the settings, without even warning the user.

Granted, I have a really unusual setup, but it's conceivable that
kmail's "fix up the user's mail directory at any costs" (parts 1-3)
logic are going to cause some major problems for other people at some
point.

Also, it would be nice if kmail didn't always delete my kmail folder
symlink at startup, if they (at that time) point to non-existent
directories. Please instead give a warning dialogue, and ask the user
what to do at that point.

Kind regards,

David.

Bug#746358: Bug reappears

2014-06-07 Thread david
Unfortunately the new version of initscripts (2.88dsf-53.1)
has a modified mountnfs script which reintroduces this bug.

The patch in an earlier post had fixed it. I don't know
enough to be able to patch the new script so i hope
somebody here will be able to come up with something.

Bug#746358: Boot hangs if fstab contains NFS entries

2014-05-05 Thread david
A few extra cents worth may help here.

1. I can confirm that the patch given earlier fixes the boot time bug.
2. For a long time I have had a delay, say 30 sec, during startup. Now
during that delay the message "Starting a job for LSB: Raising Network
Interfaces" appears. (That's not the exact text but I don't wan to reboot this
PC at this time)

3. There is a new behaviour pattern at shutdown. I have 5 mount points to
a second machine. The 4th one takes a long time to unmount or even
does not at all. I don't know if this is related to the bug under discussion.

I will try to understand what comment=systemd.automount means and
does :-)

Thanks and keep up the good work Michael.

Bug#1103862: firmware-nvidia-gsp: Can't insall nvidia-kernel-dkms or nvidia-driver due to broken dependendencies

2025-04-21 Thread david
Package: firmware-nvidia-gsp
Version: 535.216.01-1~deb12u1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable
X-Debbugs-Cc: john01...@gmail.com

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation? When I turned my computer on, I found that
my display was locked to 800x600. I think that this is related to recent
updates. Upon further examination, I found that the package `nvidia-driver` was
gone. When attempting to reinstall it, I get apt errors that indicate that a
needed dependency does not exist. I have contrib, non-free, and non-free-
firmware in my sources.list for all repositories and I had it working until
vaguely today with no changes except apt update, apt dist-upgrade, and apt
autoremove. I tried running this sequence of commands again, along with faffing
about with apt-get -f install and similiar. I also tried installing the
offending missing package manually, but apt still detects it as missing. As
such, I think that some upstream error exists and the repository is in an
inconsistent state, hence the grave severity. I am not certain about this,
however, so please reclassify if others do not experience this issue.

$ sudo apt install nvidia-driver
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 nvidia-kernel-dkms : Depends: firmware-nvidia-gsp (= 535.183.01) or
   firmware-nvidia-gsp-535.183.01 but it is not
installable
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
ineffective)? I have tried installing the package firmware-nvidia-gsp from
a manual .deb download, but apt still thinks that it's unavailable.
   * What was the outcome of this action? See above
   * What outcome did you expect instead? I expected that I'd at least have a
usable system while waiting on a more permanent fix.

phpunit 7.2 merged phpunit-mock-object back in its tree, so there is no
need to keep an outdated and conflicting version of phpunit-mock-object

Bug#902383: reproducible-builds.org: test host-specific FTBFS failures on i386

2018-06-25 Thread David Steele
Package: jenkins.debian.org
Severity: Serious

For some jobs, it appears that profitbricks-build2-i386.debian.net
repeatedly returns FTBFS, while profitbricks-build6-i386.debian.net always
succeeds. This situation has been in place for 2 months.

There is a FTBFS failure currently reported for Sirikali in Buster and Sid.
The failure is persistent across re-runs.

I can't reproduce the failure locally. The formal build succeeded.

Looking closer, success and failure is tied to the worker hardware. build2
always fails, whether running the first run or the second. build6 always
passes, when used for the first run.

I'm not able to see what the difference may be.

Note that i386 has the highest current FTBFS count across architectures.

Justification: renders package unusable

Hi Rob;

To quote lintian:

Please either perform a regular binary upload or (after checking the
license) add XS-Autobuild: yes into the header part of debian/control
and get the package added to the "autobuild" whitelist.

Refer to Debian Developer's Reference section 5.10.5 (Marking non-free
   packages as auto-buildable) for details.

Let me know if there's something I can do to help.

Bug#909155: Bug #909155 in apt marked as pending

2018-09-20 Thread David Kalnischkies
Control: tag -1 pending

Hello,

Bug #909155 in apt reported by you has been fixed in the
Git repository and is awaiting an upload. You can see the commit
message below, and you can check the diff of the fix at:

https://salsa.debian.org/apt-team/apt/commit/6f1d622c84b3b7f821683bf69b8fcdb6dcf272a2

Deal with descriptions embedded in displayed record correctly

The implementation of "apt-cache show" (not "apt show") incorrectly
resets the currently used parser if the record itself and the
description to show come from the same file (as it is the case if no
Translation-* files are available e.g. after debootstrap).

The code is more complex than you would hope to support some rather
unusual setups involving Descriptions and their translations as tested
for by ./test-bug-712435-missing-descriptions as otherwise this could
be a one-line change.

Bug#844721: libgtest-dev isn't replacing dir with symlink on upgrade

2016-11-18 Thread David Kalnischkies
Package: libgtest-dev
Version: 1.8.0-1
Severity: serious

Hi,

libgtest-dev contains in 1.8.0-1 a symlink to the new on-disk location.
That works for new installs, but doesn't on upgrades – a user ends up
with an empty /usr/src/gtest in that case. You need to work with
maintainerscripts here, see "man dpkg-maintscript-helper" and especially
the section about dir_to_symlink for details on how and why.

The justification for 'serious' is a bit of a stretch (pun intended) as
the policy isn't explicitly saying that upgrades must produce a working
package… but I hope you and/or the release team implicitly agree. :)

In all likelyhood its the same with mock, but I am not using it…

You should also update your README.Debian and the descriptions with the
new paths and the transitional package as I guess you want to retire the
old package/path some day and the longer the grace period the better…

btw: Upstream seems to have retired their remark on compiling googletest
on your own as I can't find it any longer on their website and e.g. in
the RPM/BSD worlds you get a binary only.

Best regards

David Kalnischkies

I was refering to saying in the description of libgtest-dev perhaps
something to the effect that it is a (mostly) empty transitional
package.

Anyway, thanks for fix & upload!

This looks like a bug in dpkg as it is not considering the removal of
nvidia-driver-libs:i386 as solution to the problem it runs into here
even through libapt has told it via selections that it wants it removed.

Reproducing is 'easy' with any M-A:same package which is installed for
two (or more) architectures in version 1 and one of the architectures is
upgraded to version 2 while the other is removed.

That said, you can see this bug with apt(itude) only as libapt
incorrectly detects a crossgrade here dropping the explicit remove.
As we (= libapt) want to eventually drop the explicit removes and other
frontends arguable have already like dselect I am reassigning to dpkg
– "fixing" (its closer to a workaround) this in libapt is partly done
already, so I don't need/want a clone.

In terms of the solution itself: I haven't looked closely, but apt tries
to not explore solutions caused by M-A:same version screw – aptitude
seems way more willing to suggest such solutions; that is okay I guess
as it is way more interactive, too.

CCing Benoit who expressed interest in those libraries: if are you still
interested in having php-google-auth and php-google-api-php-client in
Debian, now would be a good time to step up before they get removed from
the archive.

Hi

Thanks for the bug report. I'll try to investiate this (as well as several
other small issues) ASAP (probably not before one or 2 weeks however).
