Hi. Thanks! It looked like my nvidia video drivers weren't setup in xorg.conf (I removed my xorg.conf previously). After setting up xorg.conf with 'nvidia-xconfig' and restarting kdm, xvinfo now reports info about my card (it said it couldn't find an adaptor before), and the Sid version of VLC displays correctly.
My problem is fixed, but I think this means that newer versions of VLC may have problems rendering videos in 'x11' mode, at least with my video card.
