Bug#406392: RFP: Cellophane -- A native KDE windeco that loads user SVG data for frame and button rendering.
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist Package name: Cellophane Version : 1.41 Upstream Author : Rick Paquette <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> URL : http://www.digilanti.org/werks/cellophane/ License : GPL Programming Lang: C++ Description : A thin layer of Plastik to keep KDE fresh. Loads a frame svg file and a button svg file, just the background. The button symbol svg files are expected to be in the same path as the buttonTile. If no symbol files are found it will render Plastik symbols (with shadows). If both frame and buttonTile pass the QImage::allGray() test then Cellophane 1.41 will blend the A/I frame pixmaps with A/I frame colors and A/I buttonTile with A/I Title Button colors from your desktop color settings. The default behavior is to tint Inactive with inactiveFrame color and use svg file colors for Active. So if you want the desktop colors to affect the frame and button colors use 'pure' grays in both the frame.svg and the buttonTile.svg. If you don't want this then bump R or G or B in any color by one up or down in the frame.svg or the buttonTile.svg. Both button and frame must be "pure" gray to enable use of the desktop colors. AquaMarine, DarkLayer, NoIco and Saphire svg themes are available http://www.digilanti.org/werks/cellophane/CELLOPHANE.tar.bz2 Default themes included in src tarball default and chrome. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-2-34 Locale: LANG=en_GB.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) -- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#947803: smartmontools: smartctl -l error causes Micron 2200S NVME to fail
Package: smartmontools Version: 7.0-2 Severity: normal I've discovered that running "smartctl -l error" against my new Dell XPS 13 laptop with a Micron 2200S NVMe causes the drive to die. This obviously causes the entire system to fail, because the filesystem is no longer readable, until the power is pulled and then I can boot normally again. The system is a Dell XPS 13 7390 tested with EFI version 1.3.1 and 1.4.0. The NVME is a Micron 2200S NVMe 512GB with firmware version 22001030. I am on Debian unstable/sid. The problem occurs on kernel 5.4.0-1 and 5.3.0-3. smartctl --version says it's "7.0 2018-12-30 r4883 [x86_64-linux-5.3.0-3-amd64] (local build)". I first saw the problem when running smartctrl -a against the NVME drive. Then I narrowed it down to being caused by "smartctrl -l error". When the drive dies I get repeating errors in my syslog: kernel: DMAR: DRHD: handling fault status reg 3 kernel: DMAR: [DMA Read] Request device [71:00.0] fault addr ffe48000 [fault reason 06] PTE Read access is not set I tried and failed to reproduce the problem on live images ubuntu-18.04.3-desktop-amd64.iso and ubuntu-19.10-desktop-amd64.iso. If my memory is correct I also booted on the old 4.19.67-2+deb10u2 image and it worked okay there too, though that kernel lacks support for this hardware in many other respects. I sent this report to the smartmontools mailing list and Christian Franke replied, saying he had never heard of such a thing before and had no idea. I suspect this is some kernel problem rather than something wrong with smartmontools, but that's just a guess based on the evidence I've seen. I'm reporting against smartmontools first, but you might just want to reassign. -- System Information: Debian Release: bullseye/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 5.4.0-1-amd64 (SMP w/12 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8), LANGUAGE= (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /usr/bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) LSM: AppArmor: enabled Versions of packages smartmontools depends on: ii debianutils 4.9.1 ii libc62.29-6 ii libcap-ng0 0.7.9-2.1+b1 ii libgcc1 1:9.2.1-21 ii libselinux1 3.0-1 ii libstdc++6 9.2.1-21 ii libsystemd0 244-3 ii lsb-base 11.1.0 smartmontools recommends no packages. Bug#947803: Acknowledgement (smartmontools: smartctl -l error causes Micron 2200S NVME to fail)
This behavior is still present in Dell EFI version 1.6.0 and Micron NVME firmware version 22001040, which are current as of now. I've noted that sometimes the bad behavior won't trigger. It seems to be intermittent. The drive will sometimes recover after two/three minutes if I let it sit. Also I noticed KDE Partition Manager can trigger this bug when it starts and probes for devices.
Bug#1063678: libmrss0: Memory leak while parsing an RSS2 feed
Thanks for reporting this! I fixed the memory leak and make a new release. Please find the details attached. For the following program: ```c int main(int argc, char **argv) { (void)argc, (void)argv; mrss_t *doc = NULL; FILE *rss = fopen("rss.xml", "r"); fseek(rss, 0, SEEK_END); long len = ftell(rss); rewind(rss); char *str = malloc(len + 1); fread(str, len, 1, rss); fclose(rss); str[len] = 0; mrss_parse_buffer(str, len, &doc); mrss_free(doc); free(str); return 0; } ``` built with ``` gcc -o out -fsanitize=address nxml_err.c -lmrss ``` Given rss.xml is `wget https://blog.demofox.org/rss.xml`, ASan reports the following error: ``` = ==967975==ERROR: LeakSanitizer: detected memory leaks Direct leak of 3 byte(s) in 1 object(s) allocated from: #0 0x7f87515749a7 in __interceptor_strdup ../../../../src/libsanitizer/asan/asan_interceptors.cpp:454 #1 0x7f87511cec70 in nxmle_find_attribute (/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libnxml.so.0+0x5c70) SUMMARY: AddressSanitizer: 3 byte(s) leaked in 1 allocation(s). ``` The issue also reproduces on different files. For the following program, ```c int main(int argc, char **argv) { (void)argc, (void)argv; nxml_t *doc = NULL; FILE *rss = fopen("rss.xml", "r"); fseek(rss, 0, SEEK_END); long len = ftell(rss); rewind(rss); char *str = malloc(len + 1); fread(str, len, 1, rss); fclose(rss); str[len] = 0; if (nxml_new(&doc) != NXML_OK) return 1; nxml_parse_buffer(doc, str, len); nxml_free(doc); free(str); return 0; } ``` built with ``` gcc -o out -fsanitize=address nxml_err.c -lnxml ``` the leak does not reproduce which makes me think the issue not related to libnxml0. If we modify the first program to parse an url instead, ``` mrss_parse_url("https://blog.demofox.org/rss.xml";, &doc); ``` the error remains the same which makes me think the issue is not related to libcurl. According to libmrss0 sources (https://github.com/bakulf/libmrss/blob/cc2f489ba698a2227065731b714905ab56b1de1a/test/parser.c#L27), no invocation except `mrss_free` is required, so I believe this is a bug indeed. -- System Information: Debian Release: bookworm/sid APT prefers jammy-updates APT policy: (500, 'jammy-updates'), (500, 'jammy-security'), (500, 'jammy'), (100, 'jammy-backports') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Foreign Architectures: i386 Kernel: Linux 5.15.0-25-generic (SMP w/12 CPU threads) Kernel taint flags: TAINT_WARN Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8), LANGUAGE not set Shell: /bin/sh linked to /usr/bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) LSM: AppArmor: enabled Versions of packages libmrss0 depends on: ii libc62.35-0ubuntu3.6 ii libcurl3-gnutls 7.81.0-1ubuntu1.15 ii libnxml0 0.18.4-1 libmrss0 recommends no packages. libmrss0 suggests no packages. -- no debconf information

Package: bidwatcher Version: 1.3.16-1 Followup-For: Bug #279298 Hello, I'm sorry if I am rude (this is because I am quite annoyed at the moment.) Bug#291415: vim-gtk: Default colour scheme loads prior to user-defined one causing 'flash'
Package: vim-gtk Version: 1:6.3-058+1 Severity: minor Hello, I'm not sure this is a bug (I've just started using gvim and I've probably configured something wrong), but here goes. Package: gs-esp Version: 7.07.1-9 Followup-For: Bug #248947 I have a very similar problem. I can print most pdf-files, but sometimes cups does not print a particular file but stops with status 3 in the errorlog. This seems only to apply when i print via Linuxclient (KDE) -- when i print the same file via Windowsclient (this is a printserver) everything works smooth! Bug#343389: x11-common: missing /etc/X11/rgb.txt file
Package: x11-common Version: 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11 Severity: normal After upgrading from xfree86 to xorg (sarge w/ unstable packages) my tcl/tk applications stopped working. It was complaining about X11 colour names, so I checked and indeed my system has no /etc/X11/rgb.txt file, though dpkg -L x11-common does list it, and the debian package search also lists it. I did not remove it myself, so it must have been something in the flurry of installing new unstable packages. apt-get install --reinstall x11-common does not create the file. Alternatively, if the kernel team > ever gets around to doing their module packages, there should be a > package that provides prebuilt modules for the standard kernels > (previously offered by the ndiswrapper-modules-i386 package). I had a feeling it was something like this. I'm afraid I have to disagree with your definition of installable, especially in the context of APT. This is the first time I have come across an APT package that requires you to manually build a dependency from source. I'm no package maintainer, but as a long time end user the whole point of APT to me is the fact that if I package is in there it will have all the dependencies there as well. What if I wanted to install this on a machine that I used as a pure router/firewall/wireless gateway? I certainly wouldn't want to install a complier etc. on it. And what happens if there is a patched kernel out - I have to recompile the modules again? Don't get me wrong, I have no problems compiling things on my desktop (I am running a custom kernel, alsa modules and a few other things here) but IMVHO this is most definitely a bug as far as APT is concerned.

(The 3.5" drive is being happily used by my brother now, with no problems whatsoever.) Also, 3 out of 3 is a bit high failure rate... George B.

Bug#335538: kernel-image-2.6.8-2-386: Hard drive locks up - DMA or Power Management problem?
I think I finally fixed the problem by installing the apmd package. :-\ The problem was, I am guessing, that the hard drive went to sleep at some random time (despite it being explicitly told not to in the BIOS) and regardless of the disk activity (so even my 15 min dd cronjob did not fix it) and nothing was there to detect it and tell the system that the drive was not dead, but just sleeping. I'm not sure what apmd does when the drive goes to sleep, but it seems to do something useful. Anyway, not a kernel bug (unless you think it should have managed without apmd,) so please close this and sorry to have wasted your time. George.

Bug#294067: ppp: split USEPEERDNS into GETPEERDNS and USEPEERDNS
Package: ppp Version: 2.4.2+20040428-5 Severity: wishlist Hi I'm using dnsmasq as DNS and DHCP and it is extremely important, that my /etc/resolve.conf has only the line "127.0.0.1", so that lookups for hosts connected via DHCP don't go to the nameservers of my provider. dnsmasq can be configured to get HIS nameservers from /etc/ppp/resolve.conf It woult be nice to have an option, that the ppp-scripts only update the /etc/ppp/resolve.conf (maybe via GETpeerdns) and only update /etc/resolve.conf if I *realy* want it (via USEpeerdns). The only way to get around this issue (getting my providers DNS without updating /etc/resolve.conf) is by deleting some scripts in /etc/ppp/ip-up. Bug#316290: Speed up boot process
Package: sysv-rc Version: 2.86.ds1-1 Severity: wishlist I hate waiting for my Debian system to finish booting and let me log in. It's especially aggravating in two situations: 1. When the entire boot process is stalled waiting for, say, network I/O when it could be doing useful work 2. When I am waiting for daemons to load that are not necessary in order to log in Situation #2 *appears* simple. Could gdm/xdm be loaded earlier in the init process, before any daemons that are not necessary for logging in (example: ftpd)? Microsoft appears to have used this technique in making Windows XP seem to boot faster. In situation #1, my thought is to parallelize the execution of init scripts. Clearly some scripts depend on others already being completed before they can run. But there are numerous examples of scripts where order is unimportant, namely scripts with the same ordinal number. Also, in the past, trying to load multiple daemons simultaneously would likely result in thrashing, giving a net loss. But, at least in theory, the better I/O scheduling in 2.6 should greatly reduce this problem, coming out reasonably close to breakeven even in the worst case, and giving a substantial net win when computation and different types of I/O can be overlapped. Hardware-level disk command reordering would make exploiting parallelism even more attractive, in theory. I have no idea how difficult these problems actually are to solve in a system like Debian. But it would enhance the user experience a great deal, IMHO, if any progress was made. I am using Debian GNU/Linux 3.1, with kernel 2.6.11, libc 2.3.2.ds1-22, and a 1200 MHz Athlon.

It would be better to use sed, but I know little about it unfortunately. Basically I need the following to make it work nicely: 1) Extract all 'RunAsDaemon' lines from config file. 2) Find a line that does not contain a '#' before the 'RunAsDaemon'. 3) If not found, then exit. Good idea, however what about if the user sets the 'RunAsDaemon' option in mrtg.conf (i.e. with cfgmaker ) and then wonders why it still does not work? Perhaps not introducing any more config files than the package already provides might be best? This means I'm not going to be able to provide a lot of useful information, but I will try anyway. It may have been the permissions on the files actually. I know the nagios config files were correct, as I copied them from the machine I set up before. I could have lost some permissions in the process. Bug#317484: modutils
Package: modutils Release: 2.3.11 Errors: modprobe, depmod, and can't locate module Symptoms: Granted I'm a bit of a newbie to Linux, but not computers. I have potato with various upgrades installed. I successfully compiled my own kernel-2.4.20 (a little old, but it works). After installing, modules stopped working. Cause: After lots of checking and reading (etc.) I eventually found out that depmod wasn't doing anything. I don't know if this is a kernel build problem, or a problem with upstream changes, or both. It appears that the modules for the new kernel are now found in: /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel, and also /lib/modules/`uname -r/pcmcia It seems the use of subdirectories for module storage (although advantageous organizationally), has confused depmod so that it spits out a zero-byte sized file in /lib/modules/modules.dep, that modprobe can't use. Hence, modules don't get loaded. Resolution: Unfortunately, I haven't been able to install the latest 2.4.26 version of modutils using dselect. There's some wierd dependency problems that are keeping apt from downloading it, and I'm not going to with it. The best solution was to create a file /etc/modutils/all.paths and containing: path=/lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel Then do update-modules and depmod. This solved the immediate problem, but does not resolve including /lib/modules/`uname -r`/pcmcia or other attached subdirectories. I haven't tried multiple paths as in: path=/lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel:/lib/modules/`uname -r`/pcmcia:(etc) As I understand it, default paths were merged into the depmod code so the need for specific paths in /etc/modutils/filename could be reduced. So why am I having to state specific path(s) for it to work? Is this a matter that has been resolved in newer releases? Is this a matter of change in the kernel-source that has not been properly considered? Is this a matter of a change in the make-kpkg kernel-image process? Where ever it is, it appears that depmod can't find the appropriate directories without specific instructions. Sell on Yahoo! Auctions - No fees. Bid on great items.

Oops, I've re-read the original post more carefully and my problem is slightly different. I can switch to the console fine, but when I switch back to X, it crashes and restarts (so my computer does not hang though.) It still sounds fairly similar, but if you want me to resubmit a new bug then I will. HTH George B.

Bug#335538: kernel-image-2.6.8-2-386: Hard drive locks up - DMA or Power Management problem?
Package: kernel-image-2.6.8-2-386 Version: 2.6.8-16 Severity: important Hello, I've been having the same problem on 3 firewall boxes: after a certain amount of time (days, weeks) the hard drives will either go into read only mode or lock up for good (until a reboot) with I/O error messages. I will report about this this machine, as the others have not been rebooted yet, so they don't work properly yet (although they still forward/filter packets.) All the firewalls use Seagate ST92011A (20GB 2.5") drives and are based on the VIA chipsets (can't confirm if these are identical as one of the firewalls uses a different motherboard and is currently dead (input/output error on any command) until the next reboot. This was a problem when I tried the latest 2.4 kernel in Sarge, then it seemed to go away when I switched to 2.6.8, but is still there, just takes much longer for the fault to occur. I have a feeling it is a Power Management problem, with the drive not waking up from deep sleep (this was proven experimentally with the 2.4 kernel.) At the moment I am testing the hdparm -B 255 'solution'. Otherwise it's the 15 min ls -l / > /dev/null cron job :-S The kernel is from APT the modules loaded are by hotplug - no custom stuff. powermgmt-base is installed, but that's about it. Bug#264194: nagios-plugins: Causes problems for other packages

Bug#327199: nagios-nrpe-server: Depends on nagios-plugins whcih in turn depens on way too many things
Package: nagios-nrpe-server Severity: wishlist Hello, I know this is not really the right place to moan about the nagios-plugin package, but the problem affects this package also. The nagios-plugins package depends on the far too many things, i.e. Apache and the Nagios server. Considering that the main point of installing NRPE is to do so on remote non-Nagios boxes, this is not good. Eventually (although this has not happened for over a year) the nagios-plugins package may well be split into less dependent chunks. The only other solution I can think of is to mark the nagios-plugins as a "recommended" dependency, with a note about this in the documentation. This at least leaves the user a choice to copy the plugins (as I have done) manually from the Nagios server machine.
