Did you activate the "grouping by album" in the layout editor? Also,
you should not add the album name in the "body" part of the layout and
set the track name centered. You can do all this with the Layout
editor, hover over the fields once set and you see a wrench: click on
it and you can modify the relative position.

you could try out the predefined layouts," Verbose" for example
doesn't show the album name for every track line. Make a copy of it
and modify the items to your liking

Funny, I never was aware of that. It shows how many different people
are working on KDE, since the spelling is different in various parts
of the world. Also one is the user visible name of the application,
the second is the application name itself.

Could it possibly take one directly to a web page - possibly local?

We are still working on the Handbook, but you can have a look at the
Quick Start Guide here:
http://userbase.kde.org/Amarok/QuickStartGuide. It will be part of the
next release.

Well, Amarok is a quite big application, and it also relies on other
parts of KDE like Phonon, Solid or kdelibs. Most crashes are corner
cases and not always reproducible by the developers, so it's rather
hard to fix.
If you want to be sure to get a valid feedback for the developers you
should also install the debugging packages like amarok-dbg and
phonon-dbg, so next time you get a crash the data will be more useful.

You mean editing the Lyrics? There was a bug which didn't save the
edited lyrics on song change so the edited lyrics were lost, which is
already fixed in the next version, to be released early 2011.
As for the 'Album Artist' tag: it is only needed for albums that are
compilations and marked under Various Artists in the Collection
Browser on the left. You can make a playlist layout for that specific
case where you add this field and will see a content.

What you could try to do is set the grouping in the playlist layout to
artist instead of album, but then you will not see the album name
anymore. Not necessarily what you want to achieve I guess.

Just for your information: This mailing list is in English only, if

Find below my answer in English:.

Unfortunately you didn't tell if you run KDE or Gnome. If it is Gnome,
you should upgrade as there was a packaging bug which didn't require
the MySQL packages mandatory to run Amarok.

> ich wollte mich jetzt mit amarok auseinander setzen. leider hackt es schon

Amarok 2.3.0 is rather old, you should upgrade to Amarok 2.3.2, see
also http://kubuntu.org/news/amarok-232-backports-ppa.

You probably missed this line in the output:

> amarok:

To generate a useful debug output you need to run amarok from a
konsole with the argument '-d --nofork' twice: the first time
debugging is enabled, the second time the debug output is collected.

Could you please try again with these parameters

amarok -d --nofork

entered twice and give us the last 100 lines of the output?

Well, Amarok 2.x uses MySQL embedded by default with the option to use
an external MySQL server, it has never used SQLite, that was back in

You talk about accents and special characters. First of all, you
should make sure you use UTF only for encoding, as ISO encoding is
rather old and obsolete.

Then, our Lyrics applet only displays what it gathers from the
internet, so it also depends on the encoding of the data source, which
currently is LyricWiki: http://lyrics.wikia.com/

You might want to test one of the many available scripts you can
download directly from the ScriptManager: Menu Tools -> Script Manager
-> Button "Get More Scripts" at the bottom right. These scripts use
different sources for lyrics that might be more suitable for you.

As you can see from this line your MySQL database is not starting.
This can be related to MySQL updates (e.g. the 5.5.8 version causes
problems and needs to be patched by the distributions). Do you use an
internal MySQLe (which is default) or did you configure an external
database server? Please check your settings and permissions there.

That sounds like a problem with Phonon, not with Amarok. Could you

Amarok doesnt handle sound itself but delegates it to Phonon

Yep, this confirms my affirmation above: it is a Phonon problem. I am
sure the Phonon people are the ones who can help you best.

You can try changing the Phonon backend you are using, by now the vlc
backend and the gstreamer backend should work better than the xine
backend.

In any case, a crash with PulseAudio is more related to Phonon than to
Amarok, as Amarok is only using the underlying structure.

This seems strange to me. Keep in mind that amarok-devel@ is for
developers only, as well as volunteers for the GSoC and KDE Season of

nature. If you need support or just want to make feature requests it

Sadly you didn't provide the version number and whether you use the

But the error is in line 518 of your output. Please delete this file:

$HOME/.kde/share/apps/amarok/current.xspf

it is a corrupt playlist that doesn't allow you to start Amarok

Hope this helps.

Which phonon backend are you using? You can change the phonon backend
and restart Amarok to see if that helps. Don't forget to install the
mp3 codecs for the backend you choose.

That is not a bug, but on purpose. Just disable the "Watch folders for
change" option in the collection settings and do the updates manually
from the menu when you add files to the collection.

Hm, I don't really remember the previous versions that well, but the
"Now playing applet" is not really meant to search for last played
tracks, that is something you can do with the collection browser
filter.

We usually do not support to roll back to previous versions, as it can
break quite easily, but you should upgrade to Amarok 2.4.1 which came
out this week and brings a lot of bugfixes.

Amarok depends on kdelibs, so both versions are important.

Thank you for the information.

What can cause problems are id tags that are specific to iTunes and/or
Musicbrainz. Amarok only uses the id3 specification, so you should
check if you have specific tags for iTunes and/or Musicbrainz. Another
potential issue could be DRM for files from earlier iTunes downloads.

You can use any advanced tagging software like kid3 or puddletag to
edit those or just use eyed3 on the command line. Hope this helps.

Did you run 'amarok --help' on the command line? the option -l or

one.

Well, you sadly didn't specify which version of Amarok you use. I
can't reproduce this with Amarok 2.4.1 which is the current release.

Amarok uses Phonon for the sound output, so this is more likely a
question you should address the kde-multime...@kde.org mailing list,
as it depends not only on Phonon but also on the backend and wether or
not you use Pulseaudio.

I subscribed the above-mentioned mailing list to my reply so you don't
have to re-write something.

Sorry, but the information you sent is not useful. For crashes we need
a backtrace, see also here on how to get a proper backtrace:

http://techbase.kde.org/Development/Tutorials/Debugging/How_to_create_useful_crash_reports

And to be able to track a crash report correctly, it needs to be
submitted to http://bugs.kde.org, else we can't trace it. The mailing
list is not the correct place.

The currently recommended backends are both the gstreamer and the vlc
backend as those are under development and quite well maintained. The
xine backend is deprecated as upstream development at the xine project
has stalled. See also
http://lists.kde.org/?l=kde-multimedia&m=130721162310817&w=2

@Daniel: the phonon gstreamer backend supports the equalizer in
Amarok, the xine backend doesn't and never did did AFAIK.

If the tracks have already an image associated to they will not be
changed anymore, provided the image is locally stored, ideally in the
same folder as the track are. Amarok looks by default for either
image.* or cover.* where * can be png or jpg IIRC.

The playlist only shows what the database and id3 tags of a file hold
but you can of course also set covers there (in the Album submenu of
the context menu) and/or edit track details.

Instead of running Amarok from a user PPA, how about using the version
from the official Kubuntu backports-PPA? See also

It might be a problem with the package you are using.

Please make sure you have the gstreamer codecs installed as well.

Apparently everything needed is there. Comparing to the packages
installed here on my Kubuntu system, I also have

gstreamer0.10-alsa
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mp3
gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio

Especially the ffmpeg and/or fluendo-mp3 packages are needed, but I
don't know if those are also split up in Arch.

Well, apparently you don't have the debugging symbols for Amarok
installed as the backtrace indicates. What distribution do you use?
Depending on the distribution the package is called amarok-dbg or
amarok-debug, in Gentoo you need to install Amarok with the debug
flag, see also

But you are lucky, this is a known bug so no need to paste another
backtrace. While the bug is solved already in the upcoming Amarok 2.5,
to be released next week, you can workaround the problem by erasing
the amarok* files located in $HOME/.kde/share/config/ (depending on
the distribution this might be in $HOME/.kde4/share/config/

But since you didn't give any further information about either your

can't really help you.
How about being a bit more polite and rational and give us the necessary
information so we can actually answer you? Your mail appears to be an
answer to an extremely old mail that is not even in my archives which span

Do you have a loaded playlist with streams in it? That could be the
reason for such a delay.
But the CPU going up to 100% is an issue we can't reproduce here on
the developer machines, so this is quite difficult to solve. Which KDE
version do you use?

Did you even try to click on the Gnome Menu bar? Apparently not...

Please go to the upper panel and select the Gnome menu. The Ubuntu Software
Center is normally the last entry in the Applications section.

There you search for the package with exactly this name:
ubuntu-restricted-extras

It will ask you to enter your password (if you are the only user on this
computer) so you can actually install the package.

Then restart Amarok and it should be able to play mp3

Since you are a new user I strongly suggest you get yourself acquainted
with Ubuntu by checking out the ubuntu-manual: http://ubuntu-manual.org/

You can download it with the button on that website.

Please try the Phonon-backend-vlc instead, this might be related to

Are you aware that that icon is actually part of the logo and
trademark of Amarok? It was never intended to be changed in any icon
set.

While your logo looks very nice I still think it is not suitable for
Amarok as it suggest that Amarok is a CD player which is only a small
subset of the Amarok functions.

Nepomuk is a dependency of KDE, not of Amarok, so unless you remove
all of KDE you should not remove Nepomuk as it is needed for the
semantic desktop applications.

The Album Artist tag is needed to distinguish albums with one Artist
only (set in the Album Artist tag) or various artists (album artist
tag empty).

There were some glitches with that in earlier versions but it should
work correctly now in Amarok 2.5, I suggest you upgrade as 2.5 is out
since almost 6 months now.

Amarok 1.4.1 is extremely old (it was released in July 2006!) and
totally outdated, I assume you mean 2.4.1? The current version is
Amarok 2.5.0. I strongly suggest you upgrade your version to the
latest available in Fedora.

Since Amarok doesn't handle sound itself but lets Phonon do that you
should check your underlying sound configuration, mainly Pulseaudio
which IIRC is the default installation on Fedora. Also please make
sure you use a recent phonon backend, either the
phonon-backend-gstreamer (4.6.0 is the latest version) or the
phonon-backend-vlc (current is 0.5.0 ). All other backends are
currently unmaintained and obsolete.

For the record: you started the thread in the wrong forum part, then
you had your first post at 13:52 UTC+2, which is barely 7 hours from

FWIW: there is no such thing as Amarok 3 or Amarok 4. The current

working on the 2.6 release, scheduled later this month.

Please install the package called 'amarok-dbg' as well as 'phonon-dbg'
and 'phonon-backend-gstreamer-dbg'. You should also make sure you have
the necessary plugins installed for gstreamer.

Then please remove the file $HOME/.kde/share/config/amarokrc and try
to start amarok again. Make sure you do not activate the animation in
the Amarok settings, there is a bug in Amarok 2.5 causing this to work
correctly, solved in the upcoming Amarok 2.6

Once you have all these packages and made the modifications above and
it still crashes, please make a regular bug report to

Nice to hear from you :) We are always happy to see new designers
indeed. Since most people on this list don't speak Spanish it is
probably better to have this thread in English.

Do you have a portfolio or other examples of your previous work? You
may also have some ideas already on what could be improved in Amarok?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

I has been reported and is already fixed in the phonon-backend-vlc:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=296589

As already stated by Bart: this is a problem in the sound stack of
your installation, namely Phonon and Pulaseaudio, not in Amarok as
Amarok itself doesn't play any sound.

JFYI: the bugs database of KDE is searchable for anyone, you could
have done that quite easily, even google-ing would have shown you the
results in the first page :)

Please make a bug report on http://bugs.kde.org and add the backtrace.
A konsoleoutput is rarely use ful for a crash.
Also please do not forget to specify the exact Amarok and KDE version
you use, the distribution version is of no help here.

I never heard about that one TBH. Try using the phonon-backend-vlc
instead of the gstreamer one and see if that still happens.

Since Amarok doesn't use Pulseaudio directly but through Phonon I
subscribe the Phonon developers to this.

First of all: Please update, Amarok 2.5 is really old. I already gave
you the link to the update instructions twice, but here it is again:

http://kubuntu.org/news/amarok-26

Then: to know why Amarok doesn't play your old playlist, I need more
information:

* Where are those playlists located?
*Where is the music located these playlists refer to?
*Has the location of either the music or the playlists changed?
*What format are these playlists in?
*Which Phonon backend do you use?
*If the playlists are part of the collection: did you make a full
collection update?

But please, really, update Amarok first, we do not support older
versions, especially since there have been many changes since 2.5 and
we are about to release version 2.7 in about a month.

And that is where the problem lies: Debian stable ships a completely
outdated and unsupported version of Amarok. The current stable version
we support is 2.6, please upgrade your system.

While it makes sense to use Debian stable for a server installation it
is really not the best of a choice for the desktop, Debian Wheezy or a
spin-off of Debian with a faster release cycle like Kubuntu or Mint
are better suited for the end user.

I presume you use the phonon-backend-gstreamer, please install the
phonon-backend-vlc and switch to it in the Amarok Settings -> Playback
-> Configure Phonon-> Backend tab, then restart KDE.

The gstreamer backend is infamous for its problems with streams
playback, unforutnately.

Thank you for the debug output, but what we would need is a backtrace.
Please do the following:

(install the package gdb if you not already have it)

gdb amarok
run -d --nofork

when it crashes, type

thread apply all bt

and only give us that part after that line

Also some more information about your distribution and KDE version
would be helpful.

Well, of course you will need to have the DEBUG flags enabled for these

But since you are using Gentoo, could you test the latest git version
of Amarok? For us version 2.6 is rather old now and we have added so
many fixes since August (over 300 closed bug reports) and are about to
release Amarok 2.7 that it would make more sense to test with a more
recent installation.

There are actually 3 scripting documents in that wiki, please check again:

That is usually an indication for a script causing problems. I suggest
you disable all 3rd-party scripts to start with, and if that helps,

Try erasing the amarok* configuration files in $HOME/.kde/share/config/

Unlikely, if it is a font setting nothing will show there. And if you
want to see something you have to use the options -d --nofork

But in this particular case I doubt it will show anything, as it is a
display problem, and might be a rogue playlist layout causing
troubles, which is located in

Try changing the playlist layout in the Amarok Playlist menu -> Playlist layouts

Which is named "Amarok" like us and came out several years ago, we do
not live under a rock.

Amarok is also the name of an inuit wolf deity, an oil drilling
company in Canada, a junior football team in Naples, a record by Mike
Oldfield and a few more

But all this is off-topic on this list (except for the Oldfield
record, which our Amarok was named after in hommage).

An alternative to a script would be to add your station to the Cool
Streams selection, which is probably easier for you, but would need
some code changes on our side and will of course only be visible on
the next release, which is probably later this summer

Please tell us what you prefer.

Of course you can still make a script to cover the mean time :)

I guess there is something missing in your Opensuse installation,
probably one of the gstreamer plugins.

Beware: only install gstreamer plugins for the versions 0.10.x, do not
use the one marked as 1.x

More information about missing codecs or plugins is better asked for
in an Opensuse mailing list or forum, as this is very specific to your
distribution.

I am afraid that is not possible. And even if there were different
local collections, this would not change the sorting in the Collection
Browser, as the sorting extends to all listed collections. It would be
quite a hassle and probably quite some additional code complexity to
have different sorting for different collections.

But you can very easily change the display with the Wrench-button top
right of the Collection Browser.

As for the searching:

it is quite easy to search by either Artist or Composer, that is
independent of the sorting order, as you enter the search term in the
search field anyway.

Yes, with the option "Organize Files" (right click on a track or
album). This allows you to transcode and move files to a new location.

Caveat: make sure you have at least double the space of the files you
are moving.

The Analyzer applet depends on the phonon-backend-gstreamer, which is

First of all: from where did you download it and what instructions did

Well, you said you installed it in administrator mode. I don't know
what that exactly means under Windows (there was no such mode when I
last used it to install something), but normally just running the
installer as a simple user should be enough, it is self-explaining.

Sadly you don't specify which phonon backend you are using, which is
essential when talking about playback in Amarok, as Amarok doesn't
play the sound, but uses Phonon and its backends to do so.

JFYI: there is a known bug with the phonon-backend-gstreamer with
track to track progression. Actually the problem is the gstremer
0.10.x library, and there currently is work in progress to use the
gstreamer 1.x library in phonon, but this is not finished and hence
not released. This bug is only one of the reasons why the Phonon
developers recommend the phonon-backend-vlc to be the preferred one.

FWIW: you can find a very long list of bugs and duplicates describing
this problem in http://bugs.kde.org. Google is your friend here, as
"amarok track change" would have given you that list and more than
enough explanations...

FWIW2: your KDE version is outdated, the current one is 4.12.1 and the
4.11 branch also is still one of the maintained ones, 4.10.x isn't:

Try "amarok track change", you will find a long list.

Anyway, as a workaround, try to use the phonon-backend-vlc, that
should allow for a correct track change.
