- Download NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.09-pkg1.run (or the other one if you're
running a 64 bit system) to your home folder (/home/simon/ for me)
- switch to pty1 (CTRL+ALT+F1)
- log in
- sudo service kdm stop (will kill X server) (or gdm if you are running gnome)
- sudo sh ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.09-

I think you need the package "linux-headers-2.6.27-7" (that's his ubuntu name).
Also check that you don't have some old kernel headers left like 2.6.24 or
something. But i'm not sure of this :)

I've noticed it also happen when I want to "rise" Amarok and click on its icon,
X sometimes crash
So it may have something to do with KDE inside gnome, the task bar /
compiz-fuzion and nvidia, probably quite diff
I can confirm this bug to,
Ubuntu 8.04 64 bits
nvidia quadro FX 4500
compiz running
Re-install amarok didn't helped for me.
It only happen randomly, but is still here since 2 or 3 ubuntu release.
In my opinion,it is related to this bug :

Also experiencing this, but only on my home computer (hardy 32 bit, Athon
2000+, nvidia 4200 ti). At work (hardy 64 bit, Bi-Xeon, nvidia quadro fx 4500),
no pb, with nearly exactly the same installation. I can see the two/three lines
above too
I'll try reproduce the bug as you said.
