OMG... that was exactly it! Thanks.

(only) the texlive package itself I had missed. Now it runs 
smoothlessly. No clue though what I did run instead.

Right. Not sure how far to go beyond the point of generating decent tex 
output, with a few options (e.g. the 2-column thing from Ulrich's 
example). Probably stop just right there.
But what you would need to "compile" this tex output should be 
documented, at least a list of dependendies should be there and some 
hints how to satisfy those.

I am still fully engaged in the build structure (btw, got phalanx-scid 
working without cygwin (!!)) and making good progress. Plan is to finish 
that part on monday...
