The only reason to avoid a full-blow distro for routing and/or firewalling 
is security. LRP (and similar) run in RAM, so you don't have to worry 
about someone hacking your box--a simple reboot will set you back to your 
configured defaults from write-protected media.

You also don't need to worry about someone compiling code, using other 
services, or otherwise behaving badly, since you pretty much have a 
kernel, some drivers, a text editor, and nothing else.

That said, Red Hat (or any other full distro) will work fine as a router 
or firewall. It's just a question of how much time you want to spend 
securing the environment.
