I didn't go to that much trouble. But I tried up2date and got the same error when updating rpm. So I tried popt and got the rpm error. I downloaded everything to try it some more. Always the same problem with the same errors. This happened both before and after updating up2date. I still have the downloads and haven't tried them again. I'm guessing that another attempt will be futile. -- Madness takes its toll.
