At first, I tried using the stock rpm that came with the distro. but during compiling, I kept getting some sort of %slx errors that was crashing the compile. So I went to the update portion of Redhat's site & upgraded to the latest version of 2.96 (not sure what that was). Still, no change. I then upgraded to 3.1 (which caused nothing but nightmares there on in). Not only did MPlayer not compile, but other programs that did compile correctly, caused unknown seg faults, and other various disturbances. But I chalked that up to beta releases. So as a last resort, I downgraded to 2.95. I haven't had a problem since. I'll check out your mplayer page.
