- --whatprovides will work only if the package is installed, I believe.

- --whatprovides is used to determine what package provides a given 
capability.
For example, if you have no smtpdaemon (sendmail, postfix, etc) 
installed, --whatprovides won't help, since nothing on the machine 
provides smtpdaemon. However, --redhatprovides will determine that 
sendmail provides smtpdaemon.

- --redhat provides will resolve dependencies for all packages included in 
the distribution, even those not installed. It's use requires the 
rpmdb-redhat, and perhaps the rpmdb-powertools packages to work properly.
