This has been discussed both in my circles of tech friends and in print.
There are a fair number of low-end MoBos that are...well...simply shoddy.
They're targeted at that bottom-line cheap workstation market, and
evince all sorts of funny behavior. Like dropping CPU cycles...errant
interrupts... memory glitches.
