Did you run switchdesk? I remember having to run "switchdesk AnotherLevel" to switch from KDE to something else. I'm quoting from memory, so I'm afraid, I can't remember the details. There was something about a file called ".wm_style" in $HOME as well, AFAIR. Sorry that I can't be more detailed, but maybe it gets you on the right track somehow.
