Do you loging directly to X from booting? could you try login in terminal 
first, and then use startx?

I also switched from kde to fvwm2. I put a single line
fvwm2
in .xinitrc. But I start X from terminal. It works find. However, if I delete 
my .xinitrc file, it's by default just use KDE.

I think that's what happened when you choose "default" from the login menu in 
the login window, because your "default" is still KDE.
