I wonder if this email was really from a Microsoft employee. Would he/she have pointed out the Nimda/Code Red debacles? Of course, the "employee" mentioned that this remote root exploit was "much worse." I suppose it's hard to compare the two. Of course, you probabl shouldn't have a service such as FTP running on a server not in a DMZ.
Personally, I would always install the ProFTPD server right away, and wish that Red Hat would use this as their default FTP server with its (better, not perfect) security history and Apache-style directives. I guess I would be surprised if this email was actually written and authorized to be sent by a Microsoft employee with its admonition of the Nimda/Code Red debacle.
