What does come up?  Any windows at all?  Does it immediately exit back the 
the login screen?  Do you have any of .Xclients, .xsession, or .xinitrc in 
your home directory?  Try removing them and see if you still have the 
problem.  Try switching to a different session (GNOME to KDE or FailSafe) 
in the login manager.

Console output?  Information in /var/log/messages?  `lsmod` or `ifconfig`
while the interface is coming up?

Known bug.  I think something like 'depmod -ae' was solving the problem
for people who hadn't applied errata.  This was fixed in the errata
kernel.
