Off hand it sounds like a cableing issue except for the part that it
worked and then did not.
I can't help much on the windows side but If you boot both boxes into
linux I would first take a look at dmesg for any hardware related
messages and then /var/log/messages for any messages about the network
stuff.
Then I would run ifconfig to see if the interfaces were up and check the
ipaddresses.
THen ping each box from itself. For example if the address of box1 is
192.168.0.10 on box1 ping 192.168.0.10. If it responds correctly at
least the nic is set up in the os. Do the same on both boxes and try to
ping one box from another. If all this is jammin and it sound like it
should be from your post, take a hard look at the cableing. use
different ports on the hub. Make sure that you did not plug one of the
boxes into the uplink port. THis has the effect of reversing the input
and output conductors on that connector and can cause confusion.
Thats all I can think of right now.
