Well, the best answer (so far as my experience has shown):

Rather than getting "blah-0.01-pre-alpha.i386.rpm", get the corresponding
".src.rpm" and do "rpm --rebuild blah*.src.rpm". Then install the
resulting ".i386.rpm" file.
