apt-get will indeed make a very nice addition to the RPM tool. Until
it's here, there are things you can do to help with those nasty
dependencies.
Choosing the "everything" install option is impractical for many users.
Most new machines these days will come with plenty of disk, but if
you're not on a new machine, or if you're concerned about building a
secure box, you won't want to install any more packages than you
actually need.
Also, even if you have installed all of the packages on the Red Hat CD,
you can still run into missing dependencies as soon as you try to
install an RPM that was not packaged by Red Hat, so it's a good idea to
have some tricks around for tracking down deps.
One source of info that I trumpet endlessly is http://rpmfind.net/,
where you can search for your missing dependencies as a string.
If you're trying to install a package that you downloaded from rpmfind,
you can always go to the page for that package, where all of the package
contents and dependencies are listed as URL's. Click a dependency, get
a page of URL's for packages that satisfy that dependency. Recurse
until successful or fed up.

You're right, and that has been one of the things that has made Windows
products insecure and bloated. instead of having libraries for individual
functions, they have huge dll's that cover many, many functions. This might
seem like a good idea for those who are installing software, but it's one of
the reasons that the size of Windows has gotten way out of hand. Just
remember, the smaller the set of code, the faster and more efficiently the
software can run.
