The fact of the matter is, although RedHat and friends are probably unwilling to admit 
it, Debian's apt-get solves all of your problems: no price, no data is stored on any 
computer but the host computer, and it works. I'm not trying to start a distro war, 
only saying that a perfectly working system has already been developed and debuged, 
and RH simply doesn't want to use anything but their own software. Besides they would 
lose money if they offered apt-get like Connectiva :-)

Basically, up2date is a Corporate rip-off, and is NOT for "the good of the people", 
even if it does help *some*.
