Mike you should not have to forward the port manually at all. It
depends on the settings in /etc/ssh/sshd_config. At least that is the
way is has worked with both a commercial ssh and openssh.
THe DISPLAY variable gets set to something like :10 by ssh. But your
are right it can be slow. have you tried vnc? Depending on what is
happening I have found it to be faster sometimes and you have the added
bonus of picking up where you left off on another machine.
