I use Gordon Messmer's scripts for cheap, diry and effective vpns  I
have been running them fo over a year with very little problems.  Check
out
ftp://duke.eburg.com/pub/linux/
and get the ssh-vpn tarball.  There are a couple of scripts and config
files to install but I found it very easy to get going.  I use the to
provide subnet to subnet connections totally transparent to the
applications X or otherwise.
