Memtest86 is a stand alone memory test program.  You can find it on
Fresh Meat.  It seams to be becomming the standard memory test program
for the open source comunity.  It will find most (all?) memory errors,
and will give you the addresses and bits that are failing.  It fits
nicly on a 720k floppy, or you can put a copy on your hard drive and
have a LILO option to run it.

With Linux not running unless you have the 32M of SIMMs installed, I
suspect that you have some bad RAM, or that you have the timing set
wrong for the DIMM, and putting the SIMMs in changes the memory timing
enough to allow the DIMM to work.  IN any case, you will want to find
and correct the problem, so that you have a stable system.
