Ok.  One other thing to check.  Run "grep syslog /etc/services" and tell
me what you get.  If you do not get anything, or you get file not found,
then the problem is in your /etc/services file.  If that is not the
problem, then I will have to do some thinking...  The error is a network
error, and is caused by syslog not being able to make one of its network
connections.  Syslog uses network sockets to do its work.
