If you have to do this kind of testing in Linux, you can do it if you
are root. This is not normaly recomended, but for a test box used for
developing drivers, it would be acceptable. You don't develop drivers
on a server anyway. If you remount the file systems read only before
trying a driver that could lock the system, you don't have the delay of
checking the file system when you have to reboot.
An added advantage of testing this way - you can interact with the
driver as a normal user in one VT, and see debugging info in another
one...
