iirc, the question of what kind of DSL modem you had was asked last time
you posted this question. It makes a big difference. If it's an internal
card, you may have no choice but to use your ME box as the gateway. If
it's an external modem, you are best off using a linux box (but I'd use
the 486), or something like a linksys router (which comes with a 4 port
hub for about $105) if you'd rather learn networking in the security of
your LAN before braving the net.

As for reading, there are a number of HOWTOs that cover relevent
topics. Literally any HOWTO with net in the name will be good reading, or
just poke around the HOWTOs..
