My two cents: 

1) Use one of your linux boxes as the router. More flexible approach than a
hardware router. My recent experience with iptables confirms its superiority
over ipchains in setting up a firewall so I would go with the latest and
greatest 2.4 kernel which has had various networking fixes incorporated.

2) Connect your other linux box and the ME box to the firewall/router box
through a hub. Use your non-router linux box as a samba server for your ME box.
