Thanks for everyones prompt response so far.  You seem to be suggesting
Mikkel that I just go for 2.2.18 which is available  on the web somewhere.
As for SCSI support in 2.2.5 if I load the modules they load w/o complaint
but according to the CD-RW howto if I "cat /proc/devices" I'm supposed to
see a list (which I do) with some devices beginning with s (I cannot
remember the exact names) in which suggests SCSI support -I don't see this.
I can only assume therefore my kernel does not have SCSI support in.

You say 2.2.18. has  USB support -enough to run a printer on the port?

What I sholud have added is that I booot from a W*****s partition.  I assume
this makes no difference?

Finally how do i know which alias to put in?  I haven't bought a CD-RW yet
so I don't know what make I'll have.
