Now, bear in mind that I don't work for RedHat, but here's my take on
their KDE v. GNOME stand.
RedHat has made a significant investment in both time and money with
the GNOME project. They started down that road when KDE was still a
GPL violation (GPL'd code that required linking against non-free
libraries - QT). It took them an awful long time for the KDE team to
get their house in order (despite the whole FreeQT farce, QT was still
NOT free. It was free as in free beer, but not truly free). RHAT is a
public company, which means they have a responsibility to their
shareholders to protect investments and try to maximize revenue. Tossing
their investment in GNOME away to pave the way to push KDE2 would be a
waste of the company's money, and could even provoke a shareholders'
suit against the company.
Think about it gang - KDE2 has been out for what? A couple of weeks, along
with it a VERY different core from KDE1. KDE1 apps, from what I'm told by
KDE users don't play along with KDE2, yet. Why on earth would RedHat
unleash this debacle on their users without putting the time in to make
sure it will be a smooth transition? Personally, the only part of KDE2
I want to play with is Konqueror. It's really a shame that I've got to
install piles and piles of KDE2 stuff, just to get Konqueror.
I tried KDE2, and I still like GNOME (the Helix variety) better. Despite
my earnest attempts to give it a fair shake, it still feels too much like
Windows, whereas GNOME feels like a Unix-centric GUI. The KDE icons are
too "cartoonish" for my tastes...
