Well, I just upgrade to XFree86 4.0.1 using the binary installer off
xfree86.org, but I can't get any 3D acceleration for my voodoo 3. I've
been over the documentation that came with it several times but can't
figure it out. (System is running almost-stock RH 6.2)

README.DRI says this about Prerequisite Software for DRI to work:
o For the 3dfx Voodoo3 driver, Linux kernel 2.2.x (later kernels will be
supported in the near future, and may be required for some chipsets)

And here is what RPM calls my kernel:
kernel-2.2.14-5.0

I moved the tdfx module file to /lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0/misc/ (as per
instructions in README.DRI), but when I try to load the tdfx module
('modprobe tdfx') I get this:
/lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0/misc/tdfx.o:
couldn't find the kernel version the module was compiled for
/lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0/misc/tdfx.o: insmod
/lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0/misc/tdfx.o failed
/lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0/misc/tdfx.o: insmod tdfx failed

so what gives? Has anyone else gotten this to work?
