Emacs Alt != Esc in 6.2

OK, I finally upgraded to 6.2, which means there must be a new version
about to come out :)

I'm running into a problem in emacs (20.7), on my old 6.0 system you
could use the 'Alt-<key>' pair just like you would use the 'Esc <key>'
pair. That doesn't seem to be working with this version. Anybody have
a clue what I need to change to make that work?
