When it comes to desktops or workstations, it seems pretty obvious to me
that Linux wins hands on. It is far easier to install, use and maintain,
and it also has many more applications available.

On the server side, which is the one you seem to be interested in, I'd say
FreeBSD still has the edge. It is widely accepted that FreeBSD's TCP/IP
stack performs a lot better than Linux's too. Other than that, I'm not
sure FreeBSD has any advantage over Linux either for even in the server
market there are companies out there developing for Linux and not BSD
(Oracle, SGI...). In a matter of months, there is a good chance that we
will see journaling filesystems and databases that run in Linux but not in
BSD.

Finally, when it comes to support Linux also wins hands down. I'm not
referring only to commercial support, but also "informal" support such as
mailing lists, newsgroups, chat rooms, etc. not to talk about books and
documentation in general.

So, to answer your question, why is he switching from FreeBSD to
Linux? Well, no idea... but I may have included some good reasons in this
message. Personally, I run both in production servers and did not notice
much of a difference when it comes to reliability, etc. Perhaps the big
difference is that Linux is being actively developed and it is jumping
ahead of other OSes at a very fast pace, while FreeBSD's development cycle
is far slower. Your pick, I suppose.
