I may be completely wrong here (please, correct me), but it sounds to me
like a hardware problem. I don't think simply resetting the box would
necessarily damage the boot records that way at all... at least, I've
never seen it happen. I have seen damages happen to the ext2 filesystem
as a consequence of a reset, but never to the MBR, which is where LILO is
written.
In any case, you could have avoided that by either hitting
Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to exit out of X and then reboot in a graceful manner
from the command prompt or simply by hitting Alt+F2, etc. until you find
another console that you can use to log in and reboot.
As I said, it sounds to me as if you have suffered some sort of hardware
failure and the hard drive is malfunctioning, especially since your DOS
boot floppy fails to find the hard drive too. Again, please correct me if
I'm dead wrong.
