OSS usually works when everything else fails. You can download it and
"try before you buy". Once it goes through it's autodetect you can
scroll into "manual configuration" and write down the parameters it
proposes to use. Then try using them with sndconfig. It that works,
you're home free. If not, let OSS do the job and pay the small
registration fee... something like $30, I beleive. I've used it for
years and have not had to pay another dime to update it, which you have
to do when you upgrade to a new major kernel version.

OSS requires that you unload ALL sound modules as it will create it's
own, as it stands to reason that you can't confuse the kernel with two
modules attempting to call the soundcard at once. As root, cd into /proc
and cat modules. rmmod anything that looks like a sound module. (sound
soundcore uart401 sb midi opl3 are examples to look for) then untar the
gzip'ed file, that you get from www.opensound.com, from / and then run
the install script. I usually put it into /usr/lib when it asks. Then
it'll install itself there and run it's autodetection routine and all
you should have to do is save and exit. Run 'soundon', which will be
placed in /usr/local/bin, and then you play a wav file to test. You
should be enjoying your soundcard now. Good luck! Ric
