i have a ACER 50X cd and i can't play any audio cd's either.
Last thing i heard of this was a month of so ago and its suppose
to be fixed in the 2.2.15 kernel.

Subject: Inserting Audio CDs makes all CDs unmountable

I'm having problems playing audio cds on my system. I'm using:
PII/AMD500/128/Acer 50x CD/RH 6.2 (full install)/GNOME 1.2 (as well as
the RH6.2 version). After inserting an audio cd, ALL audio cd players fail
to see the disc. I've tried this with multiple CDs and every cd player I can
find. I've also used xplaycd from the command line with the same
results. The pisser is once I've inserted an audio CD, ALL cds (data) are no
longer mountable until a full restart. I've read one other report of this on
redhat (posted in Jan 00) but there was no response. Please help...
