DMA66 to run on any MB you have to apply kernel patches. Is this correct?

I get the same impression from Edward Dekkers post:

It sounds as though he patched the kernel to get DMA 66 support functioning.
Please, let me know if I am understanding correctly as I am going to be
rebuilding one system and building another from scratch so I am going to be
buying MBs soon.
