If you want to run an update, you first have to get the old system running
again. (Of course you could do a new install and map the old /home dir.) If
you changed de RH disk from hda to hdb, you'll have to edit /etc/fstab to
reflect the new situation. You have got to do the same thing with lilo.conf,
and rerun lilo.
If you can now boot RedHat 6.1 you should be able to run an update without
any problem. An update should leave your /home directory in peace.

I am not sure if the fact that your fstab is incorrect creates this problem.
You shouldn't need to specify the root partition for an install or update
anyway. You use this option to mount the root file system of an existing
(running) installation if you can't boot from hd.

Well, once again: Try to get your existing system running again first.

                                I hope this helps,

                                Leonard.
