Bret,

I agree with you. I don't know what part of my background is
responsible, since I grew up on OS/2. At least as long as we talk about
these 'Personal Computers' where we now do all we can to run multi-user
OS'es. (I had a different 'computer life' before that.)

I prefer to find the response on top. But that's just a preference and I
wont try to impose it on anyone.

My reasoning:

If I follow the thread, I remember the consensus. I can quickly and
easily follow the latest additions to an ongoing discussions, without
having to scroll to the bottom of every new msg. So if there were a vote
taking place (which it to my knowledge isn't), then you know how I would
vote.

OTOH, I fully agree to snip unnecessary contents when replying. I agree
that there is a limit to bandwidth. I still don't see that as the
primary reason for snipping. My primary reason is to not clutter my
responses with lots of stuff that people have already read and that
doesn't make any difference to the discussion any more. So I try to snip
'intelligently'. (Agreed, I often fail. Wonder why. :-) It is thereby my
intention to keep the important arguments of an ongoing discussion but
to clean out what I believe can be left out.

My main reaction to this thread is based on the subject line. It says:
"email style hint". And I guess that's my point. It's a style. Everyone
has his/her own style. I can see many practical reasons for not
including HTML in email. Or to snip long quotes. But to respond above or
below is just that: A question of style. It's also a hint. But a hint is
just a well meant hint indicating that the person behind has a wish.
Nothing is still imposed.

If someone doesn't appreciate *my* style, they are free to filter my
messages in their kill file. That's what I do when I'm unhappy with
something.

Best regards
Gustav
