Afternoon Hatters:

I'm trying to resolve an issue on my machine that has come up in the last
day or two.

I was originally running Red hat 6.1 with all of the updates applied. My
connection to the Internet is a cable modem through Media One, here in
Massachusetts. In the past, my machine booted, grabbed the IP Address and
nameserver information, and voila, I had a fully working Internet
connection. Now, while my connection is still working, I've noticed
some odd problems creep up, and I'm scratching my head trying to figure
out where the problem is.

Recently, like within the past day or two, Pine is taking longer and
longer to open. I've seen it hang almost 10 seconds before opening, where
before it would open up right away. I've tried this with several
different accounts on my machine, some with no mail in their box at all,
so I don't believe the issue has to do with large saved email. The only
thing that sprang to mind to check was my hostname setings.

Now, I know that by default, the Red Hat installer places your machine's
hostname in the /etc/hosts file. I went in and removed this initially, so
the only entry in there was the localhost one for 127.0.0.1. Further, I
made sure that /etc/HOSTNAME had my fully qualified hostname, so I believe
that is correct to. I'm haven't been doing anything special on my
machine that I know of, other than running the default Apache that ships
with 6.1

Any suggestions on where to check next? I believe all 3 of Media One's
DNS servers are working correctly, although I'm not sure if this is where
the problem is. I tried switching around the order of the nameservers in
my /etc/resolv.conf file, but this had no affect on the length of time for
Pine opening. I've also noticed that if I type nslookup <domain name or
hostname>, it takes longer than usual to look up the information.

I'm really stumped here, but I'm sure part of this has to do with the fact
that I don't know a whole lot about TCP/IP

I could really use some suggestons if anyone has any. Thanks.

- Mike
