Yes I do have that in /hosts/etc/. Is that something that I can rebuild in
the kernel?

yup, that's a problem.  being able to ping 127.0.0.1 is simply
a test that you have TCP/IP software installed, nothing more.
did you make sure you installed networking software?

if so, check the file /etc/hosts.  it should resemble

127.0.0.1       localhost.localdomain   localhost
