Can't speak to the Linux aspect of the machine, but I installed a
Poweredge 2300 for our local library with (forgive me father, for I have
sinned, but the library automation software requires the MS platform) NT
server. Hardware Raid.

The machine is one solid beast (and it has good cooling ==> fans louder
than your home tower machine). The hardware raid works well - it's
completely below the operating system level, managed by the PERC bios. I
had the bad luck to nudge the power cord before I had hooked up the UPS
and the good fortune to use the PERC bios to reconstruct the one of the 2
disks that had been corrupted.
