not necessarily. some modems don't like seeing multiple MAC addresses,
which if it's plugged into the hub, it will see.
lancity cable modems bind to whatever the first nic it sees is. that means
that if you ever have to power off the modem, and it's on a hub, you need
to remember to turn all the other machines off before posering it on.
imo, the one nic solution is just sloppy. a second nic costs $20... a
friend just bought 2 10/100 netgear (tulip) cards last night for $21.00.
it's worth it just to do it well...
