You can use one NIC for both your LAN and your cable modem (or whatever else),
although it is not recommended due to overload on the card.  Also you can
have only one IP address for all your network.  In this case you will have to
configure IP masquarading.  There is a good HOWTO on it in your /usr/doc...

For the second IP address on the same card you will need to learn how to
use ifconfig.  The documentation is available and is good. ;-)
