Under RH 6.1, I don't think you'll have to do that.  I just started experimenting
with apm in 6.1 with the 2.2.12 kernel.  Apm stuff never used to work in my Hitatchi
before, but does now.  I had inadvertently left apm in the runlevel when I did the
setup.  (I always had to take it out because it would cause a kernel panic before on
this hardware.)  I had been using the unit on battery and got distracted.  Much to my
suprise, it automaticly suspended itself sometime after the batter dropped below 20%
and I wasn't using it.  I applied power and it came right back to life, and the clock
was even correct.

Kudos to the developers!

There have been a number of projects over the past 2 years or so.  apcd was one, try
searching on freshmeat.net.
