yes, the "smart" UPSs from Best Power do. It knows when the UPS is running
off of the battery (it polls), but more importantly, it knows the battery
level and how long it will last. So instead of just scheduling a shutdown
event in X minutes when the power fails (like a lot of the UPSs), it will
only initiate a shutdown at some predetermined number of minutes before
battery death. It's a subtle difference, but I definately prefer it.
And it is identical to how a laptop would monitor it's battery level.
This might have happended already, but I've always wondered why all these
people who have written power lever monitoring software and applets to
display them, haven't gotten together and come up with a standard
interface between them, so I could run the same applet to monitor my
laptops battery to monitor my UPS on my workstation. There is a lot over
overlap in functionality between the two, and really the only thing that
differs between them all is the back end, which could be abstracted out,
and use different modules onthe back end.
