This was trouble for me too at first. It worked immediately after I configured
my network settings from the network configurator in the control panel in
fvwm2. I am connecting to an NT server that requires pap authentication (which
is an option in the configurator). I setup a ppp device there and the only
difference I could discern in my configuration files was in the pap-secrets
file. There was a line that looked like this:

username ppp0 password

substituting of course your username and password. ppp0 was the device which
was automatically added in the network configurator interface when I chose to
add a ppp device. This might be a little vague since I'm not in linux right
now.

The other thing I added in the first screen of the configurator were the DNS
ip's of my isp. Also you have to add your dialup phone number in the configure
hardware section of adding the ppp0 device. Then highlight the ppp device you
added and hit 'activate' It dialed me right in. Hopefully it will you too.

This little idea didn't make my ppp-on scripts work, though, and I haven't
figured out how to disconnect yet, so it is only a temp-fix. Also, it doesn't
configure your procmail--another project I'm working on.

There is a nifty little program out there called xisp that I installed with my
first linux installation. It had a windows like interface and was easily
configurable. It requires a library called xforms--get xisp and read the
readme. Follow the installation instructions carefully and you should have
full functionality within a couple of hours of downloading the packages.

http://home5.swipnet.se/~w-57220/search3.html Keep this URL for doing ftp
searches for Linux software. Be sure and check the linux box below the fields.

Here is an lsm for xisp:

X-ISP is an X11 and XForms based visual interface
to pppd and chat, implementing a dialup networking
tool. It is also a small ISP and phone company (PTT)
database manager, and a dialup costs and usage
logging tool. Currently it only supports PPP type
connections. To build it you need XForms-0.88 or
later, and if you don't have it already, libXpm
version 3.4f or later. The ready-to-run binaries are
compiled with the static version of the XForms v0.88
library (so you don't need to install the XForms
library to use them), and against Linux libc-5.

Here are the ftp sites and files for xisp:

Primary-site: sunsite.unc.edu /pub/Linux/system/network/serial
                213k xisp-2.4p2.tar.gz
                337k xisp-2.4p2-ix86.tar.gz
Alternate-site: argeas.argos.hol.gr /pub/unix/linux
                213k xisp-2.4p2.tar.gz
                337k xisp-2.4p2-ix86.tar.gz

You'll have to find xforms. I haven't yet.

note the ix86 is the binary distribution--probably a simpler install.

Good luck and read the readme's

Gary
