    My recent rash of Western Digital problems came to my attention because
of just such messages.  I downloaded some diagnostic tools that found all
kinds of problems.  I guess I should of mentioned that I was running a RH5.0
system as well.
    The sad part is, the system would boot just fine...but fail miserably
when I tried to create a file/directory when logged in.  So maybe it wasn't
the drive but some RH5 thing?  Never had such problems with RH4.X.
