I do it by rebooting up in single user mode, then I edit the passwd file.

When Lilo comes up, type 'linux single'.  That puts you in single user mode.  Then 
call up your fave editor and open /etc/passwd.  Go down to the root entry and take out 
the password.  Don't leave *anything* between the colons.  Save it off and reboot.  
Root will be accessable by *ANYBODY*, so change that password *FAST*.
