okay thanks for the wonderful replies.
I am starting off on this. I see that the module is not loaded.
currently have the 2.4.20-20.8 kernel on an i386 machine. how can I quickly get the iptables module installed?
I dont have the kernel source. so do I need to download it or is there some other way to get the iptables module enabled?

If it's not installed already ('rpm -qa iptables'), you'll be easiest to use the iptables rpm off the CD.
